Kristen and Adam
How We Met
Adam and I grew up with a mutual friend, but never met since it was at different stages in our lives. She was my next door neighbor – we were inseparable as kids but drifted apart in our teenage years. Which is when Adam met her at church youth group. Her house was the group hangout spot, so he was right next door aaaall the time, and we’d never met! How crazy is that?! When she got engaged, she asked both of us to be in her wedding. We got together as a wedding party to celebrate and shortly after I left, she texted me that he “thought I was cute”. I was flattered, but didn’t think much of it. When it came time for the wedding, OF COURSE she paired us up to walk down the aisle together.
Fast forward a year later. Adam and I hadn’t spoken since the wedding. Our mutual friends started hosting a Bible study group that I decided to join. My friend said she had been trying to get Adam to join as well, but he was just too busy with a new job. When he found out I had joined, guess who started showing up? Every week we got to know each other a little more. And here we are :)
how they asked
It was a Friday night and Adam told me he had gotten free tickets from a colleague for a play on Sunday at The Guthrie, a local theater. I thought, “Okay, that will be fun!” (turns out this was just an excuse to get me to dress up, which he knew I wanted to be!)…Sunday came and we did what we normally do on Sundays – went to church and tried out a new local coffee shop. Afterwards, Adam said he had plans for us before the show and that he would pick me up at 3 so we should go our separate ways to get ready for the night. I had a feeling that something was up – so I was in a nervous scramble once I got home. I had 45 mins to put on a cute outfit worthy of being proposed to in! I had a feeling that the moment would be photographed as my roommate is an amazing wedding photographer ;)
Adam picked me up and took me to a park with a beautiful view of the Minneapolis skyline (which I had mentioned once because it’s home and I love it so much). The park was also right next to where I went to high school, so it was very significant for me. We walked through the park and when we got to the perfect spot, he turned to me, grabbed my hands and said, “Are you nervous? I am…”
After lots of sweet words and tears, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. It was the most surreal and happy moment of my life!!! My roommate was there to capture the moment and he even had her surprise me with my dog, Rufous, who holds a special place in my heart. I inherited him from my uncle who unexpectedly passed away earlier in the year.
Afterwards, he had lots more planned – a surprise dinner with both of our families (including our younger brothers who he had arranged to come home from college out of state), a dessert reservation for just the two of us where we went on our first date and a giant bouquet of flowers waiting for me at the end of the night. It was so thoughtful and truly amazing! He is a keeper for sure :)
