Kortney and Kyle
How We Met
I was 10 years old when I met Kyle, my now fiancé, for the first time. That night, without speaking a word to each other, something about him made me feel like I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him. While I was obviously very young and didn’t know a thing about love or even boys in general, I told my friend that I would marry him someday. Fast forward 12 years and my dreams are finally coming true. I’m in nursing school so I’m always very busy and stressed out, so Kyle decided that a little break would do me some good. It was my spring break and I was telling him how I wished we could’ve gone somewhere, but his response was that we didn’t really have the money to do anything right now (which was very true) but little did I know, he already had everything planned out.
how they asked
The first night of my spring break, he told me that he had a surprise for me. We got in the car, drove 3 hours to the airport and got on a plane the next morning. I had an idea that we were going to North Carolina to see his brother and sister in law, but getting engaged hadn’t crossed my mind. The second night in North Carolina we had plans to go to a fancy restaurant for dinner. Early in the day, his sister-in-law got a “call from work” saying that she had a mandatory meeting and she said she would have to just meet us at the restaurant.
Thinking nothing of it, I continued to get ready for our night out. Around 5:30, we got in the car and headed that way, with Kyle’s brother driving since he knew where he was going. We pulled into the parking lot of a hotel and I wondered if that’s where we were meeting his sister in law or if the restaurant was somewhere inside the hotel. Thinking nothing of it, I went along with the story that they had told me and followed his brother up the walkway. He stopped at the side of the hotel and told us he would wait on his wife and that we could go ahead and walk down to the restaurant. Kyle held my hand and we began walking down the sidewalk.
Halfway through there were rose petals all along the walkway leading to a gazebo on the water that was decorated with lights. Again, being oblivious I thought to myself “wow, what a cute restaurant” It wasn’t until I saw Jenny (Kyle’s sister in law) sitting there with her camera that I knew what was going on.
She took my phone and my purse and Kyle took my hand once again. All along the sides of the gazebo were pictures of the two of us from the past 7 years of our relationship, all intertwined in lights.
Once we got to the end, he took both of my hands and said the words every girl dreams of.. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you” Before I knew it, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. I was so overwhelmed with excitement and emotions that he had to ask me if that was a yes.
Tears streamed down my face as he put the ring on my finger and stood up to hug me. I still can’t believe that I get to spend the rest of my life with this wonderful man, my forever best friend. ❤
