Haley and Kyle
I first met Roman in October 2018. He was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in my city of Calgary, Alberta. We met for literally five seconds, and then we didn’t see each other for several months. He finished his service mission and returned to Mesa, Arizona and I continued living in Calgary and going to university. Fast forward to mid-2019 when my sister and his best friend were getting married. They had an I Do BBQ in Tucson (my brother-in-law is from there) and I once again saw Roman. Similarly to the first time, it was very brief, but he had told my sister he thought I was really cute (which she of course immediately reported back!) Then, in June, my sister and her fiancé got married. I was the Maid of Honour and Roman was the Best Man which meant that we got paired together for most of the festivities. I found out that he is hilarious, and he found out that I love dogs – especially my mini dachshund, Freddie! After the wedding, he asked my brother-in-law for my number and the rest is history!
Since Roman lives in Mesa and I live in Calgary, we’ve had to do long distance for a while. This last time he visited – just after Christmas 2019 – I was secretly hoping he would propose. We had been talking about it, but he told me that he needed more time to plan and to not expect anything until late January or February. I was a little disappointed, but I understood. I knew he wanted to do something special for the proposal. However, little did I know that he was actually going to propose a day later! That day, December 30, was a fun, lazy day. We got up late, watched movies, and ate treats. I didn’t think anything was going to happen. Then, my sister Brooke (the one who got married), asked Roman and I if we wanted to go out shopping and for dinner. I didn’t really want to, but Roman seemed excited so I agreed.
I got dressed and ready fairly quickly and was super confused when my sister said she needed at least two hours to get ready (shower, curling her hair, self-tanner: the works). It drove me crazy – because I’m not very patient! – but we waited until she was finally ready and then left. As we were driving (we carpooled), I heard my brother-in-law Jared tell Brooke that he wanted to get her a new book at Chapters. I was slightly irritated because it wasn’t part of the plan (and we had already had to wait), but I didn’t say anything. So we pulled up to the bookstore and went inside. Brooke and Jared left us and so Roman and I just wandered around. I am a huge book nerd and have always loved literature (I’m just finishing my honors English degree!) so I was happy to just browse. Then, Roman told me that he had wanted to get me my favorite book, Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, for a Christmas present, but he hadn’t been able to find it in Mesa. I didn’t think much of it when he asked if he could get it for me now.
We went over to one of the store managers and asked where the book was. She directed us to it and then quickly left. As we stood there with the book, I literally did not suspect a thing (if you ask my friends and family, they’ll tell you I’m not the most observant person!). Then, Roman told me to look inside the book. I thought it was an odd request, but once again, not suspecting anything, I opened it. On the inside of the book, right on the back of the front cover, Roman had written “Kortnee, will you marry me?” I don’t think that I processed what was happening initially. I was so, so confused! I turned to Roman and as soon as I saw his smile, I knew that this was real. He then got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!! Brooke and Jared were at one end of the aisle and took photos/filmed it all! As for the store manager, she had been in on everything! She was the reason Brooke had had to stall us from leaving – because her shift didn’t start until a certain time. Everyone was so sneaky and I didn’t suspect anything! I was so surprised! As for the ring, it was more beautiful than I had ever hoped for! I had sent Roman rings that I liked, but he had picked this one out on his own and I couldn’t have done a better job myself. Every time I look down at my left hand I have to pinch myself!
Then, after I recovered from the shock of everything and being engaged (omg!!), we headed for dinner at my favorite restaurant. I immediately called my mom from the car and told her everything, since I didn’t think I would see her until way later. I was wrong though. When we went inside the restaurant, I was so surprised to see my parents, two other younger sisters, and cousins all waiting inside. I started crying again as I hugged everyone. It was such an amazing night and exactly what I never knew I always wanted! Roman made it so special and so memorable and I am so excited to marry him and be with him forever!
