How We Met
Our story goes back 7 1/2 years. It was April 2009, and we were both on our high school spanish class trip to Spain (first picture). We did not know each other at all before the trip. Jared was a senior, and I was a junior.
We connected through some mutual friends, and after the trip we all wrote down our phone numbers so we could stay in contact. A few days after returning home, I decided to call Jared. We talked on the phone a few times.
One phone call, I brought up that I needed help on my math homework, and he offered to help. I was involved in the prom committee so he helped me for a bit before our prom committee meeting. Jared ended up offering to help with prom planning.
We spent a few days together, and each day after our prom meeting, he would walk me to my car before going to his car. One day, he ended up asking me to prom (second picture). It all started as just a “prom thing”.
Prom led to calling my parents to see if he could officially take me out on a date, and we officially started dating May 9, 2009. We made it through high school, college, 2 years of graduate school for Jared, and have both begun our careers.
We are stronger now than we have ever been. Jared and I grew up together. We watched each other fail and succeed, and it all started with a school trip to Spain.
how they asked
It was a week before Jared’s birthday, and I had asked what he wanted to do for his birthday. He said he would love to go hiking. Little did I know, Jared had a few additional plans. Something sparked in Jared’s mind when I asked what he wanted to do for his birthday.
He knew in his mind, he wanted to propose. He contacted my parents, had dinner with them, and got their permission for my hand in marriage. He even contacted my best friends to let them know his plans. We left early in the morning for our hike.
It was a 2 hour drive to the Poconos, nothing seemed different to me. We began our hike, and Jared had asked a random hiker to take a few pictures of us (he whispered in the man’s ear that he was going to propose). Jared got down on one knee, and I was speechless.
We had been together for 7 1/2 years, and I had no when to expect an engagement. We continued on our hike, and once I had realized what just happened I just broke down. It was October 23, and it would have been my grandmom’s birthday.
She passed away in 2012, and she was my favorite person. I am an exact replica of her and miss her dearly. I truly believe my grandmom was with me that day, and she wanted me to know that Jared will be there for me forever.
I tried calling all our family and friends, but quickly realized there was no cell phone service. Jared and I had 2 hours to celebrate and enjoy each others company in front of beautiful waterfalls and outdoor scenery before making phone calls to let everyone know the exciting news.
It was a day I will never forget. Now, our dating anniversary is a day after my birthday, and our engagement anniversary is a day before Jared’s birthday. It was a day I will never forget.
