How We Met
We both go to the same university in Abilene, TX. Near the end of our freshman year, I was on my way to the cafeteria whenever I ran into a mutual friend of ours in the study area of our main building. Sitting with her at the table was her other friend (Kinsey). I sat down and began to talk to our friend about random subjects (with Kinsey chiming in every now and then). Eventually, it was time for Kinsey to leave for class. Once she got up and left, I turned to our friend and said, “You know, I could see myself dating her.” Little did I know what the Lord had in store for me. A couple weeks went by until we had our next conversation. It was her birthday and I had decided to tell her Happy Birthday via social media. What was a harmless Happy Birthday turned into hours of DMing and flirting. Eventually, I had gotten enough courage to ask if she wanted to go on a date with me. She of course said yes! Even though us meeting was nothing grand like in a story book, I knew from day one that that cute, brown eyed hottie sitting with our friend would somehow change my life forever.
how they asked
For the two years we’ve been dating, we’ve always gone on a really nice date right before school starts. It was our own little way of enjoying what remained of summer together. Because of this, it didn’t come as a surprise whenever Brice asked to go out on a date. This particular year, we decided to go to this really nice steakhouse that’s located on a ranch outside the Abilene city limits. Brice wanted to make this date special so he convinced me to go out and buy a new dress for the occasion (which I did not argue with, hehe). I got ready with the help of my friends (who I now know were in on it the whole time) and he picked me up right at 6:00. The hour we were at the steakhouse was full of laughs, reminiscing memories from the summer and just a sea of “I love yous.” He did a really good job of acting normal (which I still have no idea how he was able to do). Not long after leaving, Brice received a call from my dad asking him to stop by their house really fast. Brice of course said yes, which made me a little frustrated considering we were on a date and had a movie to catch (or so I thought).
Once we arrived, Brice parked the car in the front drive and ran inside. Not even a minute later, my best friend from high school banged on the car window and asked me to get out. I was so confused but she told me to follow her into my parents vineyard. Once there, she told me to follow a string of lights that led through the vineyard. At this moment, as I rounded the corner of the vineyard, I knew what was about to happen. I was about to get ENGAGED!!! I immediately start crying sweet tears of happiness. As I begin to walk down the vineyard, I see pictures of us all along the vineyard vines that stretch from the beginning of our relationship to the present time. My mind is immediately flooded with so many sweet memories that we’ve made over the past two years.
As I come to the end, I keep expecting to see Brice there but am instead met by one of the photographers. She then tells me to go to the wooden swing by my parents house. Utterly excited, I walk to the swing (still thinking Brice would be waiting there). As I walk up, I see no one is there but that there was an iPad sitting in the swing. On it was a video of both of our families talking about how much they loved us, how great we are together and how proud of us they are.
With tears in my eyes, I follow the photographer’s next instructions and walk to the baseball field. Waiting for me, on the pitchers mound, was a table with a Bible (with my new name on it), a letter and a rose sitting on top of it. I read the letter to myself, constantly trying to keep the tears from hitting the pages.
It was without a doubt the sweetest letter I have ever read. At this point, I wanted nothing more than to see him. I read the last words with apprehension because they read, “Close your eyes, count out loud to three, and turn around.” I didn’t really know where he was so I counted pretty loud. As soon as I turned around, I lost it. Walking towards me was the man of my dreams. The man that had orchestrated this beautiful proposal that every girl only dreams of, and I get to call him mine.
As he got down on one knee, my heart dropped inside my chest. Once he finally asked me to marry him, I couldn’t stop saying yes. Even though I told myself to remember every word of his speech, the only things I remember are me saying “I like the pizza” and of course “yes!!!!” Throughout the entire experience, I was flooded with all of these emotions and feelings.
Being in his arms in the end was the greatest thing I could’ve ever hoped for. At the end, we celebrated with a round of photos and a great after party with family and friends. I can honestly say it was the greatest night of my life, and I can’t wait to spend forever with my best friend.
