How We Met
The story of how we met is not very exciting, we met on Bumble when we both first moved to Washington DC. What was exciting was our relationship over the last three years. At first, I was convinced that I didn’t see our relationship moving past just friends. Like any DC lawyer, Sam convinced me that I was making a mistake and he never gave up. We often joke about how I tried to end things numerous times and would end up in tears and not walk away. Sam always stayed and would say no one cries this much if they don’t care. And so he never gave up pursuing me. I am so thankful for that because he is the love of my life and I can’t imagine life without him now.
How They Asked
Sam planned a super thoughtful and incredible day in Maui. Throughout the day he had six different surprises that were either from or represented our favorite dates and trips over the 3 years we have been together. We started the day off with coffee on the balcony, where he pulled out two coffee cups that he ordered from the hotel we stayed at in Amsterdam on our first trip together. Next, he surprised me with a helicopter tour over the Maui rainforest with a landing in the middle of the jungle for a champagne toast.
The next surprise was a sour rosè beer (our favorite beer) from a beer tasting event early on in our relationship. On one of our date nights, Sam told me to order a bottle of wine. Thinking I was ordering Syrah, I ordered us a bottle of sherry and we laughed and winced at my mistake as we drank the bottle. Sam’s next surprise what the same bottle of sherry that I had ordered from our local wine bar. Weeks prior, Sam had told me to find a place to watch the sunset near where we were going to dinner. We got ready and headed to watch the sunset before dinner. As we watched the sunset I turned around and Sam got down on one knee.
Sam knew all along that there was only one place to watch the sunset near the restaurant. Sam had worked with Engaged on Maui, a wonderful photography company to plan the whole thing. After we took gorgeous engagement pictures, we headed to dinner. Although, it turned out that Sam had been misleading me in regards to the restaurant we were going for dinner. He brought me back to the hotel where we had a private dinner overlooking the ocean that he had planned with the chef of the restaurant.
During the wine pairing at dinner, our waiter poured us cocktails into sake glasses out of a teapot. I looked at Sam and said, “Wow they do this here too.” Then it clicked. He had reached out to our favorite Malaysian restaurant in Toronto, Soos, and had them ship him a teapot. When we got back to the hotel, the last surprise was a bottle of champagne engraved with the same message I had written on the cover of a book and gave to Sam the day we started dating.
