How We Met
I will never forget the first time I saw Kileigh. I was coaching high school basketball, cleaning up after a game when she walked across the floor to exit the gym. I am incredibly shy so I didn’t say a word to her but I thought to myself, “I am going to date that girl.” I walked into the coach’s office and told the guys that I had just seen the most beautiful girl and if she was ever in the gym again, I was going to need an introduction. Basketball season came and went and I never saw her again.
Fast-forward to St. Patrick’s Day weekend about three months later and I am out at a bar with some of my buddies. One of the guys I was coaching with, Brian, came to me and said, “I know this girl, she’s incredible, you need to meet her.” I absolutely hate being set up so I laughed and shook my head, trying to get him to go away. He was relentless so ultimately I agreed to meet her and Brian ran off to find her.
I came to later find out that Kileigh was even more resistant and wanted nothing to do with the whole situation. It probably didn’t help that Brian thought I was almost 30 years old, which would’ve been approximately ten years older than Kileigh at the time. She was super freaked out by it to say the least. Fortunately and finally, after a few back and forths, Brian was able to convey my actual age and get Kileigh near me. As soon as I saw her walking over, I remember thinking to myself, “No way! That’s the girl from the basketball game!” My hands started to sweat and my heart started to race. We were standing in a group of people so I offered to buy her a drink. It was obvious that she was super nervous too. I went to the bartender and asked for the fruitiest drink she could make. I took it back to Kileigh and she was very impressed with my selection. I still have no clue what I actually ordered but we always joke that it tasted exactly like a purple jollyracher.
Kileigh and I stood at the bar and talked for hours and ultimately ended up going back to Brian’s house where we blared music, sang, and danced till about three o’clock in the morning. Anyone that knows me knows I am not a dancer in the slightest. I was willing to do whatever it took to make sure Kileigh was having the time of her life though. The entire time, we never stopped talking and laughing; it was perfect! Never in my life have I asked for a girl’s number, but I knew I wasn’t going to let Kileigh get away. I chased her out to the car, got some very shaky words out, put her number in my phone, and hugged her goodbye. We’ve been best friends and absolutely inseparable ever since. Every time I look at her, I see the girl, as beautiful as can be, walking across the basketball court all those years ago.
How they asked
We showed up downtown on a beautiful February afternoon, sun shining and breeze blowing. We took a few pictures before we made our way to the top. Once we made it up the steps, Shelby gave me the sign…I froze. After a few attempts, I finally caught on and I got down on one knee. My mind went totally blank; I fumbled around with the ring, and even tried to put it on the wrong finger. For me, the look on Kileigh’s face in the pictures really says it all. She was completely caught off guard and both of us were and are overwhelmed with happiness. She is the love of my life and I cannot wait to spend the rest of it with her.
