Keylen and Giovanni

How We Met

Gio and I met on May of 2016 at a salsa class. I’ve always wanted to learn how to dance salsa but was too shy to join a class for it. My sister started the class and forced me to go a couple of months after. I began around December and progressed very quickly. A few weeks later I was in the intermediate class and met my instructor Giovanni (aka Gio). He was always very friendly and attentive of me and tried to help me as much as he could. After each class was a social where they put a variety of music and gave us the chance to meet everyone and practice our newly learned moves.

My love for Salsa led me to meet my very first love… my instructor.

We found we had a lot in common and began talking every day after that. On November of 2016 we decided to have a small weekend trip to Orlando with some close friends. He took me to Disney Springs during night time and we stood on a bridge with romantic lights hanging and a very beautiful water fountain view. I looked away for a minute and when I looked back at him he had a small blue box with a bow on it. He then told me to open it. While I was opening it he began to unbutton his shirt. I took out a shirt from the box and it had big letters saying “YES!”. I was a bit confused. When I looked up he had already finished unbuttoning his shirt and had another shirt on similar to the one I had taken out of the box saying “BE MINE?” Of course I said yes and I was so happy to finally start calling him my boyfriend.

Keylen's Proposal in Miami Beach Botanical Garden

how they asked

I absolutely love gardens and butterflies. His parents anniversary was coming up and he told me he found a very nice garden he wanted to take his parents to since they never go out. It had been raining the whole week and I said it wasn’t a good idea to go to the garden that day. He insisted it would be fine and we should go regardless. He told me he was going to take his parents out for breakfast at a very famous breakfast place called Green Street Cafe and that I should dress nice. After giving him a very hard time to find something to wear, I found a flowery dress and my sister offered to doll me up.

After enjoying the amazing breakfast it was time to head over to the Garden. He looked very serious the whole way there and kept texting on his phone. Then he said that he needed to stop at a nearby drug store because his stomach was hurting. I waited in the car for about 30 minutes until he came out with some flowers and apologized. When we got to the Garden their was a small museum for the holocaust right before and he wanted to walk me through it. It was very beautiful and it got me distracted while he gave time to everyone to get to their places. We walked a couple of feet until we reached the Garden. There was butterflies, a beautiful koi pond and lots of greenery. He then grabbed my hand and took me to this small section in the garden where there was a red bridge with a small pond under and flower petals spread over it.

A green box similar to the one he had used when he asked me to be his girlfriend was sitting on the middle of the bridge. While he was walking me to it he said “You already know what this is don’t you.” I didn’t really catch on though. He told me to open the box and inside was a medium sized white box. When I opened it a bunch of spotted butterflies swarmed out and filled the garden. He then told me to keep looking for the other part of my gift. When I kept looking I came across this small glass box with a beautiful ring surrounded by flowers and moss. I froze and he took the ring from the box and got down on one knee. He said ” Keylen Carvajal from the first day I met you you’ve brought nothing but happiness into my life.I love you so much. Will you marry me?” I started sobbing and nodded “yes” about a million times. All of our family and friends came out of the bushes to congratulate us and I kept thinking to myself “How did I get so lucky. I love this man.”
