How We Met

From the sports training room to five years down the road, you never know where you’ll find your true love. As a freshman starting at Saddleback College, who knew that a sports injury would lead to meeting the man of my dreams. I had no intentions of dating. I figured I was going to be in and out of junior college, so naturally there was no point in getting into a serious relationship. Fate decided otherwise.

Kevin and I first crossed paths in Biology class but never had the opportunity to get to know each other besides Thursday mornings, where we bonded over lab assignments on a weekly basis. Kevin had a promising future continuing his football career at a four-year university and I was captain of the soccer team. It wasn’t until we both sprained our MCL’s within weeks of each other that we were able to start getting to know each other outside of the classroom. The sports training room conversations led to notes on my car windshield, Facebook messaging, and Kevin finally building up the courage to ask me out on our first date in Laguna Beach.

Now here we are, five years later, ready to start this next adventure of our lives. I never would have thought that spending time in the training room and bonding over Biology lab assignments would lead us to this point…

how they asked

The proposal was completely unexpected. Earlier in the week, I told Kevin I wanted a pedicure. He suggested that I get a manicure, too, because I had worked so hard this year and deserved one. I completely agreed with him and treated myself! (I always told him to make sure I had my nails done before he proposed.) We were celebrating our 5 year anniversary at the Festival of Lights in Riverside. He made reservations at a whiskey bar adjacent to the venue. We had dinner, shared a flight of whiskey, and then walked around the historic hotel.

We just so happened to “run into” an old high school friend of Kevin’s and his girlfriend who “happened” to be there on a school photography project. Kevin does not like taking pictures, but to my surprise he asked them to take one of us with all the lights. He suggested we kiss since we were standing beneath the world’s largest man-made mistletoe! After we kissed he turned me towards him and looked deeply into my eyes as he got down on one knee and pulled out the ring.

Most bystanders must have thought this was a proposal gone wrong. I was so shocked that I took several steps backwards shaking my head in disbelief and left him kneeling for nearly a minute as I repeated, “Are you serious?” Once I was finally able to settle my rollercoaster of emotions, he asked me to marry him and I of course said YES!!

I finally looked at the ring and cried even more—He did a really good job. To top off the surprises, Kevin explained the friends we’d bumped into were in on the proposal and he had booked the photographer for an additional 30 minutes. Between wiping the tears from my eyes, we took pictures around the beautifully lit festival. The last surprise of the night was going home to my parents who were patiently awaiting our arrival to celebrate our engagement! Kevin put so much thought into making this proposal special, and it couldn’t have been more perfect for me. I can’t wait for the next chapter of our lives together!
