How We Met
Mark and I are college sweethearts from the University of Dayton and officially met during Welcome Weekend of our junior year when we were 20 years old. We knew of each other all throughout our freshman and sophomore years but I decided to make the first move when I saw him standing on the porch of our mutual friend’s house for a 21st birthday party. Mark has a slightly different story! The summer before junior year, I studied abroad and Mark claims he saw my photos on Instagram and told his friends that he wanted o get to know me this year — moments later, he sunk his first hole in one. ;) Back to the porch! — He was wearing a long-sleeved button-down shirt in 90-degree weather — and even though he was dripping sweat, I couldn’t get past how adorable he was with his gorgeous green eyes, huge smile and charismatic personality.
We made plans to get pizza (speaking my love language!) and the rest is history!! We were backyard neighbors our senior year of college and moved in together after graduation. We adopted our sweet basset hound puppy shortly after college graduation and started to build our life together in Dayton. We just built a new house and moved in in June! We discussed that we wanted to get engaged after we had stable jobs that we loved, a new house, a fence for the pupper — and all of those boxes were finally checked. I knew from day one on that college house porch that I wanted to marry this guy — and 4 years, 10 months and 10 days later… he popped the question!
How They Asked
Every Labor Day weekend, we drive 7 hours to visit Mark’s family in Rochester, New York! We always have so much fun boating or winery-hopping or cooking out and the expectations were the same for this year. BOY, WAS I WRONG! My mom and I talk every day and she told me she would be visiting family in Texas this weekend — so I knew nothing was going to happen because she always told Mark she wanted to be there when he proposed. We head to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants and head up to the rooftop bar for some pre-dinner cocktails. I turn the corner and see a photographer on the rooftop and instantly begin freaking out! The photographer made a (fake) phone call to let someone know she was almost done taking “scenery” shots. I look to Mark’s twin brothers girlfriend and she says no way would he do it up here!
I check Mark’s pockets for a “ring box bulge” and see nothing… so I let it slide. Plus, my mom is in Texas! Or so I thought… I am chatting with Mark’s grandparents when someone says, “Look who’s here!” I turn to see my mom standing right in front of me and the tears start flowing. She is always surprising me… but after the second hug, it hits me. I turn around and there is my best friend down on one knee asking me to be his wife. We are surrounded by 3 generations of love and of course, I say yes! We celebrate in a private room at the restaurant and meet friends and family out at a bar to celebrate for the night!
I later find out that Mark had been planning the engagement since June! All of my favorite people were keeping this secret from me for MONTHS. I remember I was mad at him because he went to the grocery store without me… but he was actually picking up the ring! I am a detective and he had me fooled. I am SO incredibly blessed to be loved by this man and his family. #KenzieFell4McEvily #MarkFellForKenzie #MarkenzieMakes1 #EatDrinkAndBeMcEvily
