Kenzie and Bryan

How We Met

Sometimes your first kiss turns into your first love…and then it turns into forever.

I fell for Bryan after he went out of his way to hold the door open for me my second week of high school, but we never even exchanged names. I was just a little freshman in high school with a crush on the upperclassmen soccer star. A year later we were both volunteering at our High School football tailgate and he was playing cornhole with some friends. I was admiring him from afar while I worked and he ended up making a terrible throw. For anyone that knows me well this will not surprise you, but I accidentally audibly said to myself “Well that throw was TERRIBLE!” Much to my shock, and embracement, Bryan HEARD!

He turned around laughing and said, “Excuse me, what did you just say?” I was completely embarrassed but still thought it was funny, so I confidentially said again, “I said that was terrible!” We both laughed and laughed and he came over and introduced himself to me. We spent the rest of that night talking about our faith, where we saw the Lord’s direction for our lives and every last detail matched up together. From wanting to go to UF and eventually move to Tennessee to our passion for medical mission trips to Africa and adoption. We were both so in shock that night we met. In the words of Bryan, “I still remember saying to myself when you left the game that night, ‘I don’t know how, but I’m going to marry that girl someday.’”

how they asked

On July 6th, the 27th anniversary of my parent’s engagement, Bryan took me on a date to Sea World to soak in the last few days of summer, and also because I just really love the penguins. On our way home I got a surprise text from one of my best friend’s, Catie, asking us to run by her former farmhouse to get something out of the mail that was shipped there by mistake. When we got to the mailbox I saw a BEAUTIFUL pathway lit with paper lanterns and asked if we could stop and take a picture to send to Catie’s daughter Mercy, because it looked just like the movie Tangled. Bryan said yes, and as we got out of the car he suggested we walk down the path. I was very reluctant and reminded him we didn’t know the new owners of the home and couldn’t go down to the pavilion but he insisted. A few feet into the path I saw that the beautiful barn stage had been decorated with thousands of twinkle lights with pictures from our many years together hung throughout. I started bawling and finally realized what was happening.

Kenzie and Bryan's Engagement in Cornerstone Tree Farm

At the end of the path was a beautiful oak tree lit up with mason jars and a Cornhole set up around the lanterns. Next to the tree was a basket with bean bags in it. He told me to reach down and throw them in. As I picked up the first bag and realized it said “Will” I started crying even more. After making the first one in the whole (thanks for all the practice when I was little Dad!) and making the remaining “you marry me?” bags on the board Bryan knelt down to get the bean bags out of the center hole. When he knelt down and reached in he actually pulled out the most beautiful ring I have ever seen!! I can not wait to spend the rest of my life with this man!
