How We Met
Channing and I met in college on Halloween night, 2015. It was a small party at my school, mostly with people I was already friends with. The second I walked in I saw him and I knew he definitely did not go to my school! I actually remember leaning over to a friend and saying that “I have to talk to whoever that hot guy is by the end of the night!” (I should mention that he was dressed as Maverick from Top Gun with just a leather jacket and no shirt underneath, he was quite the sight)!
We ended up chatting for a good portion of the night, it turned out that he was from a nearby college and had mutual friends from my school who he was there with for the night. A week later we went on our first date (and had our first kiss!). Our chemistry was off the charts and I knew there was something so special about him, we’ve been inseparable ever since! Fun fact: on one of our first few dates, Channing started using the line, “I’m going to change your life forever.” Oh, boy was he right!
Over the past three years, we have climbed so many mountains together, and our love just continues to grow stronger. We have been by each other’s sides through both of our college graduations, transitioning into new jobs, a new career path as a firefighter for Channing, moving in together and so much more! One of the things I love most is the way we lean on each other and encourage each other through any situation.
How They Asked
About a week or so leading up to the proposal, Channing went to get his hair cut by my mom, (she’s a hairdresser). When he came back, he told me that my mom mentioned wanting to go to the wineries in Temecula the following Friday with my dad and the two of us. She said she had a gift card to South Coast Winery and that we could all go taste wine and have a nice dinner together. I thought it was slightly suspicious because my mom doesn’t usually plan stuff like this in advance, but it wasn’t uncommon for the four of us to do something like this so I went with it.
That Friday, January 25th finally arrived and I was so excited for our fun day ahead! Due to Channing being a new firefighter for the past year, we haven’t had much time for special outings so I was especially looking forward to this. The plan was for Channing and me to arrive in wine country ahead of my parents because we wanted to do some tastings and check out wineries we hadn’t seen before. Channing claimed he wanted to look at some of the wedding spots at each winery as went we about our day. I thought this was a little strange but it sounded fun to me!
Our first stop was at a winery where my mom is a member, so we picked up her shipment and enjoyed a glass of wine. Afterward, we moved onto one of the wineries where Channing wanted to look at the venue. We walked up to a beautiful white gazebo overlooking the vineyards where the wedding ceremonies are held. As we were taking in the view, Channing gets down on one knee and… TIES HIS SHOE. I felt my heartbeat speed up until I realized what he was doing and tried to nonchalantly look the other way and keep enjoying the view like I didn’t just think I was about to be proposed to. We stayed at that winery a little while longer and then moved onto the next one he wanted to check out.
We arrived at the 3rd winery for the day and went over to what is the wedding ceremony spot. Again we stood in a beautiful spot that looked out over the vineyards, and after taking it in we walked around the winery a little more. Finally, Channing said that it was probably time to go meet up with my parents so we headed over to South Coast Winery. My parents “weren’t there yet” so Channing suggested that we go look at South Coast’s wedding location while we wait. I agreed thinking that it seemed the same as everything else we had done that day.
We parked and started walking toward this beautiful arbor, as we got closer I could see that there was a wine barrel decorated with roses, champagne, candles, chocolate covered strawberries, my favorite photo of us, and a plaque with our initials on it. I realized what was happening and I started to cry. We reached the end of the arbor and he took both my hands and started saying the sweetest speech that we both don’t fully remember! It was something along the lines of, “Kendall it’s been an amazing 3 years together, I love you so much and I want to spend so many more wonderful years with you…” and then the love of my life got down on one knee, pulled out a little black box with my dream ring and asked me to marry him!
I said yes as I tried not to completely sob! We kissed and hugged before he slipped the most gorgeous ring I’ve ever seen onto my finger! At this point, I realized that a photographer had popped out of the bushes and was clicking away! We went over to greet her and I saw that he hired one of my favorite wedding photographers who I follow on Instagram! (Absolute A+ so far Channing, but it doesn’t even end here!!!)
We went back over to look at the gorgeous barrel setup, and Channing handed me a card to read. (Let me preface this by saying I am a pretty big fan of The Bachelor). This card was written in true fantasy suite style telling me that, “Should you choose to forgo your car ride home, you can use this key to stay in the Mountain View King Villa. – Chris Harrison” AKA the bridal villa at South Coast! The photos say it all because I was absolutely overjoyed and SO shocked! Our room was massive, had a breathtaking view, and was decorated with lit candles and rose petals when we arrived later on.
We continued to take photos with our amazing photographer, Sarah. After about 30 minutes or so she turned to me and said, “Ok there is one last surprise. Your mom is here with her horses for you both to take pictures with!” Again I was in total shock! Out pops my mom with her two horses for us to take more romantic photos with, in a true Bachelor style. We ended the evening with an amazing dinner just the two of us (my parents were never planning to have dinner with us after-all) and soaked in every moment of our little fairytale.
This was truly the most magical and romantic day of my entire life. I never in a million years dreamed of something this elaborate, Channing hit this one out of the park! I will cherish and reminisce on this day for the rest of my life!
