How We Met
From the beautiful Kendall of A White Orchid Wedding: Anthony and I met through mutual friends at the Art Mixx, a semi annual event that the Maui Arts and cultural center hosts showcasing local artists and DJs. Anthony introduced himself and that was really it for the rest of the night. A couple of weeks later, we ran into each other at a local bar, hung out in group settings with friends, and continued to cross paths for the next month or so. After two months of casually hanging out and flirting shyly like middle schoolers, Anthony finally got the courage to tell me he was interested. After weeks of failed attempts to go out on dates, and our crazy conflicting schedules, we finally went on our first date.
Anthony bought me two tickets to see The Green in concert for my birthday in the summer of 2015 and presented me with my first test. “Here’s two tickets to the concert, I know you wanted to go so have fun and take whoever you want.”, so naturally I asked him to go. The concert was miserable, traffic was terrible so we missed half the concert, and we made it just in time for the beer garden when they ran out of beer but none of that mattered. We enjoyed the last couple of songs the band had to play, went to a bar for 15 minutes after, and stayed up till 2 am talking anything and everything we could think of. From that night on, I knew we had something very special.
how they asked
Anthony proposed while we were on Oahu for a “Work” trip of his on November 19th, 2016. I was under the impression we were going to Oahu for a weekend trip for Anthony to bid a job, and honestly to have a fun party weekend on Oahu. That morning we went to the job site that he is doing work on for him to check it out, and see what needed to be done there. We went to lunch with some friends, and dinner at an awesome restaurant called BUHO in Waikiki. Throughout dinner he was talking about marriage and saying we should wait to be engaged till 2018, when previously he talked about getting engaged in 2016, so like any other girl, I was like wait, what?
How could you go from being so adamant about being married soon to postponing it almost two years? Any who, I got over it, I wasn’t going to let that ruin my weekend and proceeded to my next margarita. After dinner we went to Rumfire, a local bar/lounge and had a drink. It wasn’t quite going yet so we decided to get some beers and hang out on the beach for a bit. I didn’t notice it at the time but now looking back on it I should have. Anthony, who is usually very affectionate was sitting two feet away from me, and acting very anxious for someone who was a few drinks in. We sat and talked, and it started raining so I was over it.
I wanted to go up to the room and continue our conversation on our lanai where we wouldn’t get wet but he insisted we move to a different part of the beach. I agreed, so we continued there. Finally we decided to get up and he told me he had to tell me something. He told me he had lied to me for a very long time about something and that he told my family, that they were very upset with him, and continued this for about 5 minutes before fessing up. At this point, every thought had ran through my mind, my arms went from a tight bear hug to barely holding onto him with one arm.
After all the suspense, he dropped down on one knee and said “will you marry me?”. I said yes immediately, kissed and hugged him so tight again and again all night. This was by far the happiest day of my life to date. The way he proposed was truly better than I could have imagined it. I had no idea it was coming, although we had talked about it before and it happened in true Anthony custom. We are constantly laughing and pranking each other in some way or another.. Lets just say he got me good!
We are getting married on April 08th, 2017 at my parents home in Waiehu on Maui. I was born and raised on that property and could not imagine being married anywhere else. It holds such a special place in my heart and now Anthony’s as well. When choosing our wedding date, we had to make sure the wedding photographer we wanted was available before setting anything in stone so I contacted Anna Kim.
She was available for the date and with photography being so important to us, we decided on April 08th, 2017. Anthony and I knew that we didn’t want a long engagement, we wanted to do our version of a “shot-gun” wedding, so that’s what we did! Being a wedding planner, I knew I had to do it before May when our peak season hit, so we decided on our date pretty quickly. We planned a very “small” intimate wedding with only our closest family and friends being in attendance so we can truly enjoy the company of them all on our big day.
We have so much fun planned, and a truly amazing design created by myself and my amazingly talented mother, Carolee Higashino – CEO and Owner of A White Orchid Wedding (my mom) and so many other amazing vendors. My dad Peter Higashino and our entire family have put so much work into the property to make it truly amazing and transformed the area to be our perfect wedding venue. We could not be more excited and thankful for all that our parents and families have done for us thus far. Stay tuned for the wedding :)!
A month after we chose the date, we found out that we were expecting! Although it was a huge surprise we could not be more excited about our little blessing on the way. We found out a couple months before our engagement shoot and decided that it would be fun to throw in a pregnancy announcement with our engagement shoot! We could not have had more fun that day all thanks to Anna. We will find out the sex on April 3rd, five days before the wedding, so we will be doing a gender reveal at our wedding. Thank you Anna Kim + team for documenting these beautiful memories for both Anthony and I to enjoy for the rest of our lives and thank you to Liz and Anna of Maui Makeup Artistry for the lovely hair and makeup.
