How We Met
I had just started a new job in my hometown, it was summer of 2013. My boss had mentioned her son a couple of times, but I didn’t think much of it. I work in my county’s Voter Registration office, and it was getting close to a November election. One afternoon, Thayne came in to absentee vote for the election with his dad. I’m pretty sure it was planned, as my boss had me talk to him to “practice” since I was still pretty new working there. I remember being really nervous and realizing I hadn’t put much effort into looking nice that day. We exchanged some very small talk about him voting, and he left.
A couple weeks later, I saw him again. My boss invited me over for Sunday afternoon football (go patriots!) at her house. Thayne is a very shy person, so we didn’t talk a whole lot. I always tease him about that day, because I made cream cheese cupcakes and brought them over, and he ate 4. He absolutely hates anything sweet! When I look back now I realize it was one of the first sacrifices he made for me. When it was time for me to leave, I walked out to my car and got in. I looked up and Thayne had come outside to shut their garage door. I hesitated for a minute, thinking he was going to come over and talk to me, but he didn’t. I went home to tell my mom all about my afternoon and told her how cute I thought Thayne was. She convinced me to text his mom, my boss, and ask what she thought of me asking for his number. Shortly after, I got a text back with his number. I texted him and told him who it was, and that I had a great time. His first response to me was asking me on a date for that following weekend!
We went to dinner and then just drove around and talked. I think we really got to know each other better that night in the car. He dropped me off at home just before midnight. I went inside to again, tell my mom all about it! Thayne and I made plans again to see each other again soon.
A month or so later we were officially dating, and spending a lot of time together. He was at my house almost every night and we’d watch movies and just talk. Most nights he wasn’t leaving until almost 2 am. Everything was perfect.
On December 5, 2013, I suddenly lost my father to a massive heart attack. My world turned upside down and I just couldn’t keep up. My dad was such a fun, outgoing, loving, strong man. How could this happen? Why? I needed my dad. I felt so lonely and cheated because I was 22 years old without a father. Thayne was there for me the moment I told him. He never left my side.
The following months were awful for me. I couldn’t shake the feeling of fear that I had for my dad. Where was he? Was he scared? Why couldn’t I have been there to do something? I cried a lot. Each time, when Thayne was there, he comforted me. He never stopped hugging me, he never asked why. We had only been together a month and a half and he took on all this responsibility. He started staying with me every night after this, because I had such a hard time with it all.
Thayne is such a strong man. He stayed put when he easily could’ve ran. Losing my dad made it so difficult those first few months, and he stuck through. He never once complained, never questioned why I needed him so much. He was just there. I will always love him for just that. He proved to me, love doesn’t meet you at your best. It meets you at your mess.
how they asked
We had just gotten home from Christmas Eve festivities with our families. I put some of our things down on the table and went to get ready for bed. I came out into our living room to watch A Christmas Story on tv, it’s tradition for us. I told Thayne we had to leave the tree on all night because it’s Christmas Eve. I looked over at him and he was standing there looking at me. He told me he had a present for me now, and reached into his pocket. As I looked down, I saw this beautiful ring in a box. My first reaction was to giggle like a little girl! He got on one knee and asked me to marry him. I didn’t even say yes, I just hugged him. We stood there and hugged and laughed. He took the ring out of its box and put it on my finger. I can’t stop looking at it!
