Kelsey and Chad

How We Met

Long story short, we met at work! Chad works in IT and I was getting help from the IT department when I first laid eyes on him. I thought he was super cute and decided to stalk him on Facebook. After learning that he was a few years younger than me I quickly stopped myself and that was the end of it… or so I thought. One of my coworkers got to know him more and she thought we’d be a great couple. She would constantly mention him to me and push me to give him a chance. I continued dismissing her suggestions and didn’t think much of it. A few months later a group of colleagues got together at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop for game night and my coworker invited Chad. I thought “you sneaky snake!”. Chad and I talked a little bit that night and the next thing I know he started showing up to all the other game nights. He was clearly trying to get my attention so I gave it a shot and hot dog, here we are now!

How They Asked

So Chad and I have talked about getting engaged for a while and I told him that it would mean so much to me if my family and/or heather could be there. I’d send him memes of friends or sisters hiding in bushes to get the ultimate proposal shot and he’d laugh it off. I didn’t think much of it and didn’t think a proposal would come for some time.

Chad had to be in Nashville for work, along with about 30 other IT people from McLane, so I decided to tag along. We told Chad’s parents about our trip and Chad’s dad told me that he and Terri would be flying to Tampa the same day we were going to Nashville because he was going to be given an award at work. Then a few days later they would leave for France. I didn’t think anything of it. A few days before I went to Nashville I had dinner with my parents and they asked where I was traveling to next (I travel a lot and they usually forget where I’m going). When I told James I was going to Nashville he was surprised because he “forgot” about the trip. He asked what activities we were doing there and told me a few stories about the last time he was there. Again, I didn’t think anything of it.

Fast forward to Thursday, September 26, 2019:

We arrived at the airport early in the morning along with several other McLane people. As soon as we got to Nashville we headed to Haddie B’s, a hotspot for hot chicken. I was texting Heather the whole time about how good the food was. We followed it up with a milkshake at Legindairy Milkshake Bar and walked off a few calories while we shopped up and down Broadway. We went back to the hotel and decided to take a nap before we had to be ready for a private tour of the Grand Ole Opry at 5. The tour was set up by McLane and I was simply a plus one.

I woke up from my nap later than expected and was rushed getting ready. In fact, at one point I got so frustrated with my curling iron that I banged it against the counter a few times. Chad was cool, calm and collected during my mini-meltdown, which was kind of unusual. I expected him to say something or roll his eyes, but he didn’t. Then someone delivered a gift basket of alcohol to our room with a card. The card said something like “congratulations and well wishes on your happily ever after”. I definitely thought they had the wrong room and Chad said he’d talk to the front desk about it later. I asked him “are you proposing to me tonight?!!” and he said, “Um no, I don’t have a ring.” That said, I didn’t think anything more about it…

We arrived at the Grand Ole Opry and our group was split into two for the tour. We toured backstage, the fitting rooms, etc and ended with the opportunity to take a picture on stage with the options of using props. The first group had already finished and they were back in the main room watching the rest of us take our pictures on stage. Somehow (on purpose, but I didn’t know) Chad and I were the last couples to take pictures. The photographer snapped a few shots and that was it. As I went to grab my purse chad pulled me back and told me he needed to talk to me. I think I asked if he wanted another picture with the guitar props they had. He said no and said he needed to do something that he’d been wanting to do for a while. I kept asking him to stop and I think I tried to get away from him. Then his voice started shaking a little bit as he told me how much he loved me. I kept asking him “what are you doing?!”. I looked at his pockets but I didn’t see a ring box, so I was confused. I scanned my memory and couldn’t remember ever seeing a ring box with him, then I became even more confused. Then he reached in his back pocket and got down on one knee. He pulled out a really large box and I was shocked. Half of me was wondering where he got the box from and the other half couldn’t believe what was happening. I kept asking if he was serious and said OMG over and over again. Then he opened the box and I screamed (the ring is to die for!)! He asked if I would marry him and duh I said yes!! While everyone was cheering, I heard a familiar cheering voice come from the audience. I looked into the audience and saw my mom, stepdad, best friend, and chads parents jumping up and down. I was SHOCKED!!! I had absolutely no idea they were there and I was at a loss for words. The Opry crew then took us into one of the famous dressing rooms and let us snap a few pictures before they made us go to the gift shop.

After the proposal, I learned about all the details. I learned how chad had asked for my parents blessing many months ago and told heather about the proposal back in May. He flew them all to Nashville for the big event and had a car pick them up from the airport. He reached out to the company that set up the conference and the Opry to make the plans go smoothly. I learned that many people from McLane were involved, including Grady, Brad, Pat, Ally, Ard, Anne, Trae, Cassidy… the list goes on and on. I found out that Pat flew the ring to Nashville and the hotel locked it in their safe without knowing the combination code to unlock it so they had to break the safe open just before our tour began. I learned that Chad canceled our reservations at the steakhouse that night and created a new reservation to include everyone. I also found out that Terri didn’t know about the proposal until a few days before because she can’t keep a secret. There were SO many details!
