How We Met
Martin was out visiting some mutual friends of ours one weekend. I was supposed to leave for two weeks on a work trip, but a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico prevented that from happening! Our mutual friends had wanted to introduce us for a while, so they invited me to dinner the same day I found out I would not be leaving. I went straight to their house, and walked in wearing long-sleeved coveralls and combat boots, with a military seabag on my back and a backpack on my front, and I ran straight into Martin! He likes to tell this next part of the story-I said “Hi, I’m Kelly!” and he immediately thought “Hi, I’m in trouble!” It must have been some first impression because we had an amazing night, he impressed me with his hot-wing eating skills, and he called me a few weeks later to wish me happy birthday and ask me out on our first official date! The rest is history, as they say :)
how they asked
The same mutual friends that introduced us came with us for a week-long vacation in Colorado, where I’m from. On the last day of our trip, we, along with our friends and my parents, decided to drive up to the top of Mt. Evans, a 14, 265 foot “fourteener” west of Denver. The road to the summit is incredibly narrow and does not have a guardrail on the downhill side. I drove with white knuckles and was terrified the whole time! When we got to the parking lot, we hiked the last few hundred meters to the top, and found the perfect rock for photo opportunities.
I should mention that it was 32 degrees at the summit, and I was in shorts, so I had wrapped a blanket from the back of the car around me! The photos started out as group photos, but eventually someone said “Ok, now just Martin and Kelly!” Once it was just the two of us, I was squeezing Martin tightly because I was so cold, and you can actually see the outline of the ring box in his pocket in photos (I was completely clueless). After a few photos, he shoved my hand out of the way to get the ring and got down on one knee!
He asked me to marry him, and I was so shocked that I didn’t say anything! He had to prompt me to say something, and I finally mumbled yes! He told me later that because he is afraid of heights, he was actually more nervous about being on top of a mountain, teetering on a rock, than he was about proposing! I’m glad he faced his fears, because it made for an amazing story :)
