How We Met
Joe and I went to the same high school. He is three years older than me, and we had friends in common, but never really met. One summer when I was in graduate school, my brother played on a summer lacrosse team with Joe and we would all go out for drinks after the game. That’s where I met Joe. We still didn’t really speak.
A few months later, we met out again with mutual friends. This time we spoke… and danced, and sang, and laughed. This went on for a few weekends, and I always hoped to see Joe out with friends. Finally, on a Sunday in October, he kissed me. Joe has this captivating personality that I crave every day. He is a happy guy who loves life, craves adventure, and also feels like home. I couldn’t be more lucky that he chose me.
how they asked
Joe and I went on a long weekend trip to Washington DC over Memorial Day Weekend. He loves history and had recently taken his lacrosse team there, so he wanted to bring me back to show me some of the amazing things we saw. He planned a jam-packed weekend of the things I loved to do; the perfect mixture of activity and relaxation.
On Saturday, we woke up early and went for a run through the national mall (I was training for the New York City Marathon). Joey didn’t usually join me on runs, so this was a special treat. After that, we rented bikes and rode back through the city. We hung out at the rooftop pool, went out for a delicious brunch, and did a bit more bike riding and exploring. I distinctly remember thinking, ‘This is a really, really good life.’ I was bursting with happiness and joy and love on that day – all before the ring.
After a few rooftop cocktails, I suggested we head downstairs to get ready for dinner. He made reservations at a tapas place that looked amazing, but we were running a little late with all the fun we were having – maybe we’d rethink the plan. For a moment, we were all alone and he said, “Hey, babe? I have to ask you something.” I turned around and he was getting down on one knee and pulling a ring out of his pocket!
I screamed, “NO!” out of pure disbelief and ran away and missed most of his speech about wanting to spend forever together. He finally had to ask, “So, is that a yes?” to which I replied with a teary-eyed nod. He suggested I take a look at the ring, which was exactly the one I always envisioned – yet somehow better than I had ever imagined.
He totally surprised me, which is really hard to do. We lived together, and I thought I knew about everything that was in our apartment! I was completely caught off guard and didn’t have a second to suspect anything. It was truly the most amazing moment of my life and felt so incredibly intimate and private. It’s kind of rare that it’s just “us”- between our crazy schedules, social lives, big families, and more. The way we were in that moment was so exciting, surprising, and right.
