How We Met
Elmer and I have known each other for as long as I can remember. We met in our youth group and were friends from the beginning. Elmer, my brother and I were like the only three people who went to that church who lived in the same little town of La Porte, TX. So we shared that in common. One day I needed a ride home and asked him, I thought it was going to be weird because we had never really hung out but it was so light and easy and it just felt natural. We blared the music and sang to each other on the way to my house and it just felt right. There was something about him that made me feel so peaceful and free. Months go by as us being friends until he finally asks me to be his date to a friends wedding. Ever since that night we’ve been hooked on each other.
How They Asked
I thought we were going out for dinner and drinks to celebrate his new job. My older sister asked to join us which to me was a total date night buzzkill! (no offense sis). Elmer and my sister chose a new restaurant downtown to go to and all wanted to get dressed up. I thought absolutely nothing of it, we were celebrating! We go to the area of the restaurant which happens to be down the street from a pop up we love called the Flower Vault. Elmer and I found the Flower Vault back at their first installation in San Antonio when we were on vacation. The owners are the sweetest and do such a great job with all of their rooms. When they opened up in Houston we knew we had to go. So before going to dinner, we walked a few blocks down to the Flower Vault even though I had already said that it was closed for the night. Elmer and my sister insisted that we walk by. The door is magically unlocked and there’s soft music playing on the speakers. The lady at the front said they were closed for a private event, but that we could take a look around as long as we stayed quiet and away from the last room (which was my favorite). As we’re walking through the rooms, I realize that it’s my favorite band that’s playing and I’m still 100% clueless! We get around to the last room when Elmer says to my sister rather loudly, “and this is Kelly’s favorite room”. We turned the corner and I couldn’t believe my eyes. A path made of rose petals and candles, the song that I said I would only share with my future husband, and our dearest family and friends. I was in disbelief and said no about a billion times, but when Elmer got down on his knee and asked me to spend my life with him I knew that was the easiest “yes” ever. My proposal was perfect and an absolute surprise! I can’t help but put on an ear to ear smile each time I think of it. He did so great, and I’m so thrilled we get to spend our lives together!
