Keely and Jimmy

Keely and Jimmy's Engagement in Lake Calhoun, Minneapolis, MN

How We Met

We met junior year of high school. We were both in a class called child-related occupations and one day Jimmy finally got up the nerve to talk to me! We started talking and sitting next to each other every day and he invited me to visit him at work at Cherry Berry. I finally got up the nerve to go and a few weeks later Jimmy asked me out on our first date! Our first date was our dinner at Panera (where we politely got kicked out because they were closing), and then a local carnival and fireworks. And as they say the rest is history :)

how they asked

Keely’s Story: August 16th, 2018. Every year we have a date day we use to spend the day with each other since Jimmy has to see everyone under the sun when he comes home on leave. The date day was like any normal date day we’ve had – started with breakfast and then Jimmy skillfully working in manicures for the both of us :) Then we took a trip to Minnehaha falls to do some hiking and sightseeing because we have done it in the winter but never in the summer together! Then we headed over to the humane society (after Jimmy smartly filling my belly with mac and cheese) where we were lucky enough to find a fresh litter of pups that we got to play with!!!!!! Then, as always, we went home to get dressed up for a fancy dinner. We went to Mill City Kitchen for a fancy farm to table dinner (which was super good!! and apparently right next to my doctor’s office).

I had a feeling that the proposal might happen tonight, just because of how we had talked about the timing of it all and because Jimmy seemed to be a little nervous (and he had really really planned this day out which is unusual) but then if I’m being honest with everyone, the wine was a tad strong and the flatbread so good that I kind of forgot all about it until we left dinner. We finished eating and then Jimmy suggested going to the beach on Lake Calhoun to watch the sunset. We sat on the beach together talking and watching the sunset for a bit when Jimmy asked if I wanted to go walk in the water. After standing on the shore for a bit, Jimmy pulled me back and made a little speech and asked me to marry him (with an incredible form I must add).

Honestly I don’t remember much of it because I was totally frozen and in shock that my picture perfect Pinterest proposal was actually happening and it was all real life (any of you who know me well know that I freeze up when I’m surprised and kind of don’t know what to do and my emotions and reactions are pretty much stuck in the shell shock stage – side note to my side note, I was also just in shock because the ring box had a LIGHT and holy cow was my ring SHINY).

Wedding Proposal Ideas in Lake Calhoun, Minneapolis, MN

It was so perfect (and of course I said YES! and then asked if he was sure he wanted to marry me cause I wanted to make sure he knew what he was getting in to ;) ) and then all of the sudden a girl I had thought I recognized appeared and took pictures of us and the proposal. I thought I recognized Jimmy’s best friend Alec’s sister on the beach doing a random photoshoot, but Jimmy tried convincing me I was wrong, and I believed him even though I was right :) It was THE perfect proposal and Jimmy incorporated everything I could have dreamed of – asking my dad and brother for permission, the beach, using my full name, and the ring and man of my dreams. It could not have been more perfect.

– Keely (I’m sure in Jimmy’s version he’ll emphasize how much I questioned if it was indeed Morgan taking random pictures of someone on the beach because he emphasizes it every time)

Jimmy’s Story: Well, every time I come home it is always an extremely busy and slightly overwhelming time due to trying to see everyone I love and care for and spend as much time with each and every person possible. Sometimes this can put a strain on me and Keely, so to try and prevent that we always dedicate one full day I am home to just the two of us. We plan out a full day of events and I decided to use this event to work the proposal without giving Keely any inclination that it was coming. I took the responsibility of planning the entire day out so I could work in the proposal how I deemed fit. I’m sure Keely gave you a rundown of everything that we did that day so I’ll only hit the highlights. Well after breakfast at Hudy’s Cafe in Champlin we went to a nail salon down the street. The importance of the nail salon was so that I could ensure her nails were freshly done because I knew an onslaught of pictures were to come later in the evening after the proposal and I wanted her hand to be ready! (Plus it gave me an excuse to try one out for myself and I must say, it was actually pretty enjoyable.) Well after the nail salon we preceded to Minnehaha Falls.

Keely loves waterfalls so I thought it would be a great place to bring her on this day and see one of the things she loves. After the falls we had lunch at Noodles and Company and then headed for the Golden Valley Humane Society. Keely loves to go to the humane society and play with all the little doggies and see all the other animals there so of course, I had to take her there. There we got to play with a fresh litter of puppies and see some brand new kitties too, however, we aren’t able to adopt any animals yet but hopefully soon in the future, we will be able to! After the humane society, we headed home to change for dinner. We also try to go to a new “fancier” place for dinner whenever we go out, so we got all dressed up and headed to Mill Valley Kitchen for dinner. We ate a fabulous dinner there and afterward I suggested we go watch the sunset on Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun). We headed over to 32nd beach and found a spot on the beach to watch the sunset with Minneapolis in the background. For those of you that don’t know, Keely is in LOVE with the beach but, with us being in Minnesota and all this was really the closest I could get her the real deal. One of the things that I wanted to make sure happened during the proposal is that I wanted to make sure there was somebody there to capture the moment on camera.

I thought and I thought about who I could have photographed this moment and after very little thought I remembered that my best friend since forever ago, Alec Weis, has a sister who I’ve seen take some phenomenal pictures who is Morgan Knutzen. I reached out to her and right away she was on board to help with this magical moment. When Keely and I arrived at the beach Morgan was there with a friend of hers pretending to be doing a photo shoot so she could be closer to us when the moment came. This was a great idea however, I didn’t think Keely knew/ever met her before so I didn’t think that Keely would recognize her. Well as we were sitting there I noticed Keely was kind of watching what they were doing the whole time with an inquisitive look on her face. Finally, Keely turned and asked me if the photographer (Morgan) looked like Alec’s sister! All I could think was, “CRAP I’m busted!!” I turned to look and tried my best to play it off that it wasn’t her.

I convinced Keely that it was his other sister that she was thinking of and that she did kind of look similar but not really. It was just enough to win Keely over and make her move past that situation. I was so stressed out during that small two-minute ordeal and I still can’t believe I was able to convince Keely otherwise!! A few minutes passed and I asked Keely if she wanted to go walk down into the water a little since it was so nice. We headed down to the water and stood there getting our feet wet for a short amount of time. I turned around to find Morgan and make sure she was ready to capture the moment and I received an approving smile and thumbs up showing that she was indeed. I pulled Keely back to the shore and then proceeded to propose to her. Of course, you know how that turned out of you wouldn’t be here reading this right now!

All I can say though is that I am so happy that I get to be marrying the love of my life. I would be nowhere near where I am today without her and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us! I love you, Keely!

Special Thanks

Morgan Knutzen
