Keely and Devin

How We Met

Devin and I met in 2015. I had just started my freshman year of college, and he was a year older than me, trying to figure out what he wanted to do. We both went to the same high school, but hung out with different crowds. He was my best friends brother, so at that time, that’s all he was. Catherine and I spent most of our free time together, so I began to know Devin pretty well. Once the New Year hit, Devin had swore into the Army National Guard. He had left for basic at the end of March, and from then we didn’t speak to one another.

As the weeks went by, Devin graduated basic and moved onto technical school. He got his phone back and was able to contact home quite frequently. He was facetiming his sister, while I was in the room and he asked about me randomly. We talked, and later that day I added him on Facebook, just as a friendly gesture. We talked over Facebook for a little bit that night and he randomly stopped answering. I just thought, oh that’s the end of that conversation but an hour later, he explained that he was at formation and gave me his number. Little did we both know that throughout the four months we were talking over the phone, we grew a strong connection that later became the start of our relationship.

Devin became my person. We grew a bond that couldn’t be broken, we became inseparable. He was the one to lift me up when I was down and always knew how to put a smile on my face. We made more plans in the 10 months we had together than I could’ve ever imagined. We found out that Devin was set to Deploy by October. Which meant, he wouldn’t even be home a full year before he had to leave again. Of course it wasn’t what any of us had wished for, but when duty calls, duty calls. He ended up leaving a month earlier than he was supposed too, cutting the time we had together even shorter. We grew closer than either of us knew was possible. We truly love one another and we knew it from the beginning, that we were meant for one another.

how they asked

Two and a half months had passed since he left, and we got word that he was coming home for four short days. We were more than excited, but we also knew that it would end in him having to leave again. It was the night before Thanksgiving when he came home, we had planned so much in the little amount of time we had. Black Friday came around, and of course we went shopping. We got a few hours of sleep and we got up November 24th, and got dressed for a day spent at Clyde’s Cider Mill in Connecticut where Devin knew I always wanted to go. We had a nice drive through Connecticut, with not just us but Catherine and Sabryna too. We parked in the dirt parking lot, and found the shop where we could buy the apple cider and apple cider donuts. I didn’t think anything of it, but Sabryna left to answer a phone call, and we purchased what we wanted. We left the little shop, and Catherine pointed out another building. A building where they make the apple cider. I just thought it was just something else to see, but little did I know what was about to happen.

We walked through the door, Catherine in front followed by me and Dev. I heard music start to play, mine and Dev’s song, Yours by Russell Dickerson with roses scattered across the floor. There was a sign painted in my favorite color, hanging on the wall that read, “Keely Ann will you marry me”. I remember looking back at Dev and seeing a big smile on his face and watched him get on his knee and look me in the eyes and try to get the words he wanted to say to me out, when he asked me to marry him. He stood up and embraced me in what could’ve been the best hug, and I looked around to see both my parents, his parents, Catherine and Sabryna standing there waiting to hug us and congratulate us. We were able to get a few pictures inside but also found a beautiful spot outside to take pictures.
