How We Met
Josh and I met on the night of his senior prom. He had just been named prom king and I was just a sophomore enjoying my time at an upperclassman event. He was getting ready to graduate soon and Ieave for college while I was right in the middle of my high school time. We both went to a small town high school where just about everybody knows everybody. But, I was two years younger than him and our paths had never really crossed just yet. Even though we went to prom with two separate groups of people, Josh had somehow made his way over to our get-together after prom. Probably feeling pretty confident after his royal victory, he came over and asked me if I wanted to try on his totally obvious ice-cream-bucket-with-felt-over-it crown. We got to talking after that and phone numbers were exchanged. The next few weeks I saw him occasionally at a few post-graduation events and we had talked over the phone a bit. It was soon summertime and it took Josh that whole summer to convince me to go out on one date with him. A few weeks before he left for college, as I had probably used up all the excuses in the book, I agreed to go out with him. It’s not that I didn’t think he was cute or that we didn’t get along great, but I was shy and I knew he was leaving for college very soon, so what was the point? The point was that we had the best and sweetest first date. He took me out for miniature golfing, ice cream, and we finished the date watching the most beautiful sunset as a storm rolled in at a local park. After that, we saw each other almost every day. He was leaving for college so soon that we both agreed we did not want to start anything official. We were just enjoying each other’s company and having fun being young. Once he left for college, we continued to talk every day. It didn’t take us too long to realize that we didn’t want to give up what we had. In late October 2008, Josh made it official and we have been together and just as happy ever since.
how they asked
I always thought I would know. Josh had never been good with surprises throughout our 7+ years of dating. He sure had tried, but I somehow always managed to ruin it for myself. How I missed the signs to this one, I will never know. We were on spring break in the Monterey Bay area, California with two of my friends from graduate school. Monterey Bay is very near and dear to my heart. I had spent almost every summer there as a kid growing up and Josh and I actually vacationed there once a few years prior. To give you a quick flashback, when Josh and I had came out to California a few years before, we had stumbled upon this beautiful place known as Point Lobos. Josh is an avid outdoorsman and I sure do appreciate a spectacular view and the ocean, so this place was just perfect for the both of us. We had such a fun day exploring a place neither of us had ever been to. We took many pictures and it was definitely the highlight of our trip. Flash forward to now. It was the third day of our trip and Josh had really expressed to me that he would like to go to Point Lobos. Usually Josh just likes to go with the flow, so his persistence on visiting Point Lobos that day was a little unusual! That was the first sign I missed. It was turning out to be such a sunny day that of course I agreed! Once we arrived, we set out to hike to a spot in Point Lobos called Gibson Beach. My friends and I had really wanted to take some pictures, so we found a spot on the beach with a huge rock and Josh took a few pictures of us. After that, Josh asked me if I wanted to take a picture or two on the rock with him as well. This was definitely sign #2 as Josh is almost never the one to want a picture taken of us! But, I was apparently being very naive and was just happy that he actually wanted to have pictures taken :) As we approached the rock, a big wave came in and I hurried up to jump up on the rock so I wouldn’t get my jeans wet! Right after that, I heard – “Hey Kaylyn.” As I turned around, he was on his knee with the most beautiful ring staring up at me. He was smiling up at me as he asked me to marry him. I was in such total shock as I went over to him and said, “of course.” My friends were right there to capture photos of a moment I will cherish forever. I found out later that that proposal was his Plan C, as his two other plans to propose had gone awry for different reasons that day. But, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It was so perfect in every way.
