How We Met
We met back when we were both 14 and working at the same summer camp. Neither of us was really interested in each other back then but we were still friends. Then about 5 years later we reconnected when we were both living in the same city and attending the same church. Alex bumped into me one Sunday and suggested we grab drinks sometime to “catch up”. I considered it for a couple of weeks, unsure where it might go but finally agreed to the idea and suggested we get cauliflower bites at a local pub, just to make it more fun than the classic “let’s get drinks” kinda date. The pub had just changed the menu so we had tacos instead and talked for about 4 hours. After that, it was a few more weeks before he asked me out again and then it went from seeing each other every other week to several times a week. And here we are!
How They Asked
I had been kinda waiting/expecting a proposal all summer since we’d been talking about it for a while. Finally, on September 21, 2019, we had plans to go hiking in Fernie, BC. Alex has taken the initiative to plan the day which was kinda suspicious already but he had also dropped hints about a different surprise day so I told myself this was probably going to be a solid hiking day together and that’s it.
We had a slower start that morning and took our time getting bagels and coffee at my favorite place in town before we made it to the hike. Finally, we got up to the trailhead and started making our way up what I was expecting to be a good 10km hike over a mountain and around. We were maybe 10 minutes into the hike when I turned around a few trees that the trail followed and saw a sweet little table set up with a letter board sign and hand-written card reading, “Kayley will you marry me?”
It took a second to click as I initially just thought it must be for someone else on the trail. Then it hit me that it was for me and this was actually happening so I turned around to see Alex down on his knee with a beautiful ring-opened in front of me.
It genuinely was one of the most exciting moments and I couldn’t stop saying WOW before finally telling him YES!
After that, our friends came crawling out of the bushes with cameras to capture the whole thing for us and give us the champagne to pop! It was an awesome time celebrating and following that we decided to take the day easy, grab an ice cream and go for a walk with each other down by the river in town. We got to sit and just soak up the mountains and the Fall air before we shared with the rest of the world and it ended up being the sweetest afternoon with one another. We finished off the day with Mexican food at another favorite restaurant of ours and got treated to free tequila shots by our waitress so all in all, it was a pretty rad day!
