Kaylee and Orion

Kaylee's Proposal in Morgantown, WV

How We Met

Orion and I met through our church teen group while in high school. We were good friends for several months and would hang out outside of church with other friends from the teen group. Unlike other teenage boys I knew, Orion was mature, responsible, and thoughtful. Plus, he always made me laugh, so I enjoyed spending time with him. We grew closer over the coming weeks, and Orion planned an evening hang-out with our friends to go fishing. This was not unusual for our group, so we went to a friend’s house at our local lake to fish from their dock. It was that evening, on a walk by ourselves, Orion asked me to be his girlfriend. We have been together ever since!

how they asked

In early 2018, Orion and I started seriously discussing the time frame for when we wanted to get married. We established we both wanted to be finished with college, so that put us after May 2019 for a wedding. With both being in college and working, we knew we would need about a year to plan the big day. So although I knew marriage was on Orion’s heart and the engagement would likely be coming soon, I was not totally expecting it on May 2, 2018.

It was our 4-year anniversary and we were going out to dinner at a local restaurant to celebrate. Orion had told me we would also be going to a friend’s lake house after dinner to end the evening with the sunset and conversation on the lake-front dock. I was a little suspicious about going to the lake, as this is where Orion asked me to be his girlfriend 4 years prior, so this was a special place for us. We had a typical dinner date, and Orion acted completely normal. He was nervous for his accounting final exam the next morning, so we had planned ahead that this wouldn’t be a late night out for us, as he needed to go home to study. After an ironic coincidence of “Marry Me” by Jason Derulo playing at the restaurant, Orion hurried me out of the restaurant to get us to the lake house. Little did I know, he had a time frame to stick to!

We arrived at our friends’ lake house around 5:30pm. When we turned the corner of the house to walk to the dock, I didn’t see any “engagement-esque” decorations. The dock didn’t have any flowers, photos, lights, etc. So at that point, I didn’t expect the proposal at all. As we walked down the 50+ steps to the dock, I was startled by a man who shouted, “Hey, guys!” He was sitting on the neighbor’s retaining wall above the dock, fishing. Orion and I politely said “hi”, and the neighbor started rambling about the weather and the lack of fish. I was annoyed because I didn’t want this chatty neighbor to keep talking to us since Orion and I didn’t have a lot of time to spend together.

We walked to the end of the dock, and I went to go sit down on one of the chairs, but Orion took both my hands and kept me standing with him. He began to express his love for me and how he wanted me to be his wife. I was in such shock, I honestly don’t remember much of what he said! After many “oh my gosh’s” once I realized what was happening, Orion got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. While hugging and kissing him, I realized there was someone taking pictures of us… it was the chatty “neighbor”! He was actually a photographer Orion had hired for the proposal! Orion still teases me for the next thing that came out of my mouth- “Wait, so do you have a final tomorrow?!” Laughing because of where my mind was at that current moment, Orion told me that although the final was scheduled for the next morning, after telling his professor about the planned proposal, he was able to take the final early. Thank goodness! I didn’t want Orion to have to go home to study after just proposing!

After taking photos and facetiming our family and friends, Orion told me he had another surprise for me. He then showed me a video that he had created days before with the photographer, Anthony. The precious video showed Orion’s thoughtful planning of the proposal, what he loved about me, and his excitement for our future together. If I hadn’t already cried buckets of tears initially, I was bawling now!

Orion had gone above and beyond my wildest dreams of a proposal! This day was so special for the both of us, as we shared our love for each other and look towards the future! We are thrilled to be getting married in fall 2019.
