How We Met
We always laugh when people ask us how we met because we don’t know exactly when/where we met, but we say it was sometime around 1st grade. Both of our older brothers played on the same hockey team when they were younger and we were always at the hockey rinks running around together while our brothers played and our parents watched. Then in 3rd grade, Josh started attending the same church I had already been apart of. We got to know each other better as we were growing up. Once middle school came around, we ended up going to the same middle school, where we were in the same group of close friends (who are all still our best friends and are all going to be in our wedding!). We “dated” on and off in middle school, if you can even count hanging out watching movies with a group of friends dating! ha! There is even a note that was passed back and forth where Josh asks me to “go out” with him, and we still have it. Cute, right?! Even though we went to different high schools and dated other people, we always remained friends and found our way back to each other at the end of senior year. We went to prom together, where Josh asked me to officially be his girlfriend… and the rest is history!
how they asked
Now that we had been together for 8 years, Josh made an awesome plan to propose while we were up north at our favorite spot, a campground that we go to every summer (also where my parents met!). He was all set to pop the question on our favorite bench, under the stars by the lake and it was going to be perfect!
However, my Grandpa became very ill, very quickly and it wasn’t looking good for him. The weekend of June 20th-22nd, 2014 I was scheduled to work all weekend but was able to get my shifts covered so I could go up to Moorhead to visit him, knowing it was going to be the last time I would get to see him. I texted Josh at about 6pm Friday night (while he was at work) and let him know that I got my shifts covered and was going to leave early in the morning with my mom and cousin, Megan.
Josh brought Noodles and Co. home for dinner that night and when he walked in, it was just as any other night, he put the bag of food on our coffee table in front of me and we were just chatting about our days. I started taking everything out of the bag, napkins, silverware and ya know… a RING BOX. I grabbed it out of the bag and just kind of stared at it. My first thought was that I wasn’t supposed to be seeing it and that he made a mistake! So, I just sat there speechless not knowing what to say. He then took the box from me, told me how much he loved me and asked me to marry him! All while I’m now balling my eyes out and so speechless I could barely say ‘yes’!
He had decided in the two hours from when I told him I was leaving in the morning to see my Grandpa till when he was off of work, that he wanted to propose before I left, JUST so I could tell my Grandpa and show him the ring. My Grandpa was SO happy and excited for us!
Even though it was very spur of the moment, and not what he had originally planned, it really meant the world to me that Josh was so thoughtful and gave me that gift to share with my Grandpa. It was perfect timing as my grandpa passed away 9 days later. I wouldn’t have had it any other way, it was PERFECT!
