How We Met
Cody and I first met on July 16, 2011. He and my stepmom both worked at Casey’s, so she had gotten to know him pretty well. One day, she sent me a picture of this guy, asking what I thought of him. Of course, I said he was cute! A few days later, on the 16th, my stepmom and I went into Casey’s to get some snacks and drinks for our float down the river later in the day. Cody was working and we stopped to talk to him. After we left, Cody had texted my stepmom asking for my number. He thought I was cute too! We talked that whole day and night. By the wee hours of the morning he had asked me out.
The next day we went on our first date-a five hour float down the river. Cody had just graduated high school at 19, and at the end of the summer I was 15, heading into my sophomore year of high school. My dad and stepmom knew Cody and thought he was great, but my mom and stepdad were not fans of the age difference! We had strict rules and specific times we could see each other. Now, he is a 25 year old college graduate. I am 21 and completing my degree in the fall. We bought our home together last May, we are doggie parents to the two sweetest pups- Camaro and Charlie, and soon we will be husband and wife!
how they asked
These will forever be some of my most favorite photos! On my 21st birthday, October 29th, 2016, Cody’s parents flew all of our family out to Florida. On the trip there were 11 of us: Cody’s mom and dad, his sister and soon-to-be-brother-in-law, his brother and sister-in-law, with their three sons, and us. We were in Florida for three days when the time came for Cody to ask me to marry him. We all went out to the beach take “family pictures”, so Cody’s parents had pictures of our whole and separate families.
When it was our turn, Cody’s sister, the photographer of the family, suggested we take a few pictures down by the water. As we were smiling at the camera, Cody’s dad and three nephews came walking down the beach to us holding a sign that read, “Hey Miss Kayla… Will you marry our Uncle Cody?”
As I saw the sign, Cody dropped to one knee and asked the question I couldn’t wait to answer. The beach was filled with strangers clapping, cheering, and snapping pictures. A beach proposal at sunset… it was perfect.
