How We Met
Hey there, my name is Chris, and I am a magician.” – If you were on a dating site, and someone sent you a message like this, would you give them a chance? My name is Chris, and I’m a magician from Massachusetts. I met my soon to be wife online, however our story is a bit unique. My subscription to an online dating site was running out, and I was not planning on renewing my subscription. That was, until I came across Kayla’s profile. She said she was a photographer and enjoyed working with kids at her church, (and she was pretty cute) so I had to message her. Working with the youth is a passion of mine, and finding someone that enjoys doing that was a big deal for me. Finding a beautiful, single woman in her early 20’s who wanted to serve in youth ministry wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. In my mind, if it didn’t work out with Kayla, I was going to be done with online dating (and dating in general) for a long time. It took a few days for her to respond, but she eventually messaged me back. We kept messaging, and eventually she asked what I did as a profession. I told her that I was going to school to be a teacher, and was a magician…I got no response. I wasn’t really surprised by this, because whenever I tell anyone that I’m a magician they look at me like I’m crazy. People have always heard of magicians on TV, but barely anyone has ever met a magician that works full time as an entertainer. They usually think I do witchcraft or something like that and don’t know how to respond.
We had been messaging almost daily up until this point, and my subscription was about to run out. So I did what I thought was the next best thing – I gave her my email address. (I didn’t have much dating experience, so I didn’t know giving out an email address was weird until she told me later down the road!) My subscription eventually ran out, and I hadn’t received any response from Kayla since telling her I was a magician. I was bummed. I thought I finally found someone who might be a good fit, and was confused why she wasn’t emailing me! So I decided to pay $30 just so I could message her back. I was fed up with online dating, and only spent that $30 so I could talk to her – and it was the best $30 I’ve ever spent!
She eventually messaged me back, and I went on to get her number. I even got her Snapchat username. Now you need to understand, I use Snapchat to make funny stories because some of the youth group kids at my church follow me on Snapchat. I act very silly, and use the filters to tell funny stories… and to my surprise Kayla loved that. She loved that side of me and loved how I could joke around, and that made her feel a lot more comfortable about meeting in person. We eventually met up for tea at a local mall. She tells me today she didn’t want it to work out between us when we met up, and she was just meeting me to say she gave it a shot and move on. She said she originally made her online dating profile as a joke to get her friends off her case about being single. However, she didn’t know what was coming next.
We sat down, and what happened next changed the course our lives. I showed her some magic tricks. And let me tell you, I wish I could have recorded her reactions! She was so impressed, and from that moment on, she tells me that she was hooked. She went from thinking of me as the creepy magic guy from online to the coolest guy in the world. Come to find out, she also thought the photos I posted online were a horrible representation of what I looked like, and she was pleasantly surprised when she saw me in person. (I didn’t think they were that bad!) She’s a professional photographer though, so I can’t say that I’m shocked about this. I’ve thought of what I wanted to call our story, and I think a fitting title would be “The Best $30 I’ve Ever Spent”.

Chris showed up at my house with a huge bouquet of flowers early that morning. He told me he had a surprised planned, which wasn’t out of the ordinary. He told me we were going into the woods for him to get a photography lesson, so I packed my cameras. The drive was very long and once we got there I realized it was the same place we went hiking when Chris asked me to be his girlfriend.
We kept talking about how we wanted to go hiking there again so I was excited but confused- Chris lived an hour away from me and the hiking trail that was 40 minutes from my house was a halfway point- only 35 minutes from him. I immediately asked him why he bothered driving an hour first to pick me up when I could have just met him there and saved him 2 additional hours driving me. See the video for the details!
