How We Met
Carlos and I met at a Country bar. We both enjoy country, but it’s not our first genre of choice. We were actually both there wing-manning for our friends, who were coincidentally each meeting different people they had met on a dating website! We both weren’t looking to talk to anyone that night, just being there as back up for our friends in case they needed a quick getaway from their dates, which is what actually happened! Carlos’ friend was actually a friend of mine as well. He saw me walking by with my girlfriend who had just decided that her online hook up was a total weirdo, and called us over to their bar top! We hung out all night, and watched as our friends got a little closer to each other. We actually weren’t into each other at all that whole night, we talked the whole time though, and sometime later in the night I made him two step with me (which he was horrible at, haha!)
Something funny actually happened that night as well: As we were sitting at our bar top, a man that was a little too drunk and a little too friendly came up to me and persisted that I dance with him, I made it obvious that I was uninterested, but he wasn’t taking the hint. I slowly leaned over to Carlos and whispered, “Please pretend to be my boyfriend, this guy will not leave me alone.” Carlos then proceeded to grab my bar stool, and pulled me closer to his chair as I exclaimed, “this is my boyfriend.” The guy immediately started apologizing and telling Carlos how, “he had a good girl here,” and that, “I was a keeper.” Little did Carlos know that this guy was absolutely right! Haha!
how they asked
Carlos and I went to Puerto Rico this year for his family reunion. His second cousin was having her first birthday, so it was a huge family affair. I was already nervous in the sense that I was meeting his whole family for the first time, his extended family at that. We had flown to our first stop on a red eye flight, followed by our last stop in Puerto Rico on another long flight immediately after, we were beat. The first day we were there we went to all his family member’s homes, we said a lot of hellos and did a lot of introductions, after that, we crashed. The next day Carlos’ dad had planned a whole day for us and his sister, Chaly. We first went horseback riding on a 2,000 acre property, it was amazing. We rode through a vast forest of lush greens and toured the property for two hours. Toward the last leg back to the stables it started raining! It was like something out of a movie! We were soaking wet and exhausted.
After that we headed to this stretch of restaurants on the beach to grab some food before heading to the next activity. We still had a little bit of time to kill after eating so we decided to go to the beach until it was time for us to meet up with our guide. In this picture below, you can see how excited I am to be at there, oblivious to what was about to happen next:
Happy as clams to be in Puerto Rico!
Carlos and Chaly started undressing and running out to the water. I started following behind a little after because I didn’t have bathing suit bottoms on, so after a small debate with myself I decided to change really quick and head out! The water was crystal clear and the sand was so soft, it was absolutely breathtaking. I started to swim towards Carlos but quickly realized he was too far out for me to keep swimming toward and be able to stand!
He started giggling all weird and started pulling me toward a more shallow part of the water. At that moment Carlos pulled out that little black box that every girl dreams of, and in that moment, in the vast Caribbean Sea, Carlos asked me to marry him. I immediately started crying and freaking out, wanting to see the ring, but not wanting to lose it to the ocean! I carefully opened the box (something that still gives me the chills when I think about it; what if I would’ve dropped it or got hit by a wave?! *shudders*) and saw the most beautiful opal ring tucked into it’s velvet black pillow. It was surrounded by a halo of diamonds, sitting on a white gold setting, and on top of all that, it was vintage.
It was perfect, just like his proposal, just like him.
Here we are moments after.
When we swam back to shore Carlos’ dad was so ecstatic for us, and expressed how happy he was that I made his son happy. It made me feel so good about the rest of the trip, it couldn’t have gone any better.
We all headed to our next activity, which ended up being us zip-lining through the Yucatan Rainforest! It was such a beautiful day, and all the people we were zip-lining with congratulated us the whole time on our new engagement, I don’t know how the day could’ve gotten any better at that point. It was more than I could’ve ever asked for.
A beautiful country, with a beautiful man, and his beautiful family.
