How We Met: Sean and Katy met in Montauk, NY during summer 2012. Katy was out with a few girlfriends and leaving a popular local spot, The Sloppy Tuna, just as Sean arrived with his brother and a friend. Sean went to college with one of Katy’s friends, who quickly introduced Katy before explaining that while it was nice to see them, the girls were leaving the bar.
Katy was gone before Sean could ask for her number—but that didn’t deter him. Sean is a resourceful guy and quickly put together that his friend had Katy’s friend’s phone number. Sean texted his friend, Sean’s friend texted Katy’s friend and Katy’s friend texted Katy for permission to share her number. The chain came through for Sean and the two went on their first date back in New York City at Uva, a wine bar near Katy’s apartment.
Over the course of the next few months, Sean and Katy spent a lot of time together. On the weekends, they went to Montauk. In the mornings, they drove to Montauk Lighthouse to watch surfers and sip iced coffee from Bliss Kitchen. In the afternoons, they went to the beach with friends, ate lobster rolls at Clam Bar and drank BBCs at Cyril’s. During the week, they spent time at Katy’s apartment pool and went to dinner at places like Barrio Chino, Lure and 15 East. On Labor Day, with the summer coming to a close, Sean asked Katy to be his girlfriend.
From there, the adventures continued. They met each other’s families and spent every summer in Montauk together. They planned vacations in places like Deer Valley, Santa Monica, Australia, New Zealand, Anguilla, Mexico and more. They even did a sailing trip together, chartering a boat with Sean’s family to sail around St. Vincent and the Grenadines, touching 12 islands in just 10 days. But no matter how many places Sean and Katy visited, Montauk was always their special place.
how they asked: On a romantically rainy day in March 2015, Sean brought Katy to the Montauk Lighthouse. Sean told Katy how special the lighthouse was to him because it reminded him of her. He said, “I could come here everyday with you and never tire of it. And I know we will continue to come here together…because I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” With that, he got down on one knee, opened the Mervis Diamond box and asked, “Will you marry me?”
Of course, she said, “yes.”
