Katy and Hunter
How We Met
Hunter and I met in the summer of 2003 in Ocean City, NJ. Growing up, I spent every summer at my family’s vacation home in Ocean City along with my beach friends that I met throughout years of attending local camps. When I was 13, my friend Jackie asked me if I wanted to come hang out with her friend from home who was also at the beach with his family that week. After attending an all-girls school for my entire life, all I needed to hear was ‘boy’ and I hopped on my bike to meet this mysterious friend. At 15, Hunter immediately took the top spot as the coolest boy I’d ever met and we quickly developed a summer romance. After a date on the boardwalk, teaching him how to surf and attending my 14th birthday (at TGIFriday’s, very classy) I headed back home at the end of the summer as the coolest freshman on the block with a sophomore boyfriend that went to another school. The fall and the 30 minute distance between us proved too much for our teenage love and our relationship sadly came to an end by October.
Aside from being friends on Facebook, our lack of mutual friends kept our paths from crossing after that point with the exception of a few quick run-ins over the years in Ocean City. Fast forward ten years, I was living in New York City and came home to attend Jackie’s wedding. Since we went to different high schools and different colleges, I headed to the event fully expecting to know no one but my parents and their friends but as soon as I walked into the cocktail hour — there was my first boyfriend looking as handsome as ever. After nine months of traveling back and forth from New York City to West Chester for weekend visits, I finally made the move back to Pennsylvania. On September 1, 2014 we made things official (for the second time) and spent the next two years and seven months having fun, traveling, buying our first home together and becoming puppy parents to our adorable Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Waffles.
how they asked
Being the detail-oriented person that I am who is exceptionally hard to surprise, I always thought I would have a sense of when the proposal was coming. On April 8, 2017, we enjoyed an amazing but perfectly normal day at home making breakfast and walking Waffles in the gorgeous weather — I had no sense anything was coming! In an effort to not go out to eat quite as much, Hunter suggested we go out Friday night and then spend Saturday cooking at home to enjoy our new deck and save a little money. Once he began cooking, I realized he was recreating the first dinner he ever made for me in February 2014. As he had done this before, I didn’t think anything of it and just looked forward to the amazing dinner that was coming.
Once the food was ready, we put everything on the table when I noticed my wine glass was empty. I doubled back to the kitchen to grab the bottle of wine and when I walked back into the living room, Hunter was on one knee with Waffles jumping up and down by his side. Shocked was an understatement! In Hunter’s words, he knew he ‘really’ got me because my nails weren’t even done! He truly made our engagement a surprise, something I always dreamed of, and created the most special moment of my life with just our little family in our first home together.
