How We Met
On April 10, 2016, I was enjoying a day off when a friend asked me to go to a small bar on Ashley River Road (South Carolina) to support her fundraiser. It was a great day, the evening carried on, and we danced the night away (literally). That’s when a group of guys walked in like they had a good time on the water that day. This is when I first saw Jonathan, and he looked like the perfect catch!
What made this night even better was when he stood next to me at the bar, looked over at me, and his first words were “Can I get you a beer?” We continued to talk, laugh, and get to know each other. Since that night we have been completely inseparable. Jon has always been so caring and selfless, and this showed on the amazing first date he took us on as we went from Vendue to Hall’s steakhouse, to Kaminski’s, and then danced the night away at Republic!
How They Asked
Our families have been very supportive of our relationship over these four years and have been there every step of the way, even living in PA and NY! With that, it was very hard to meet with family long distance. On our family vacation to Wildwood,NJ in July 2019 we were so excited to see the Billie crew. Jon was particularly nervous the first day at vacation because walking back from the beach with my mom and dad, he had asked for their blessing. My dad looked at him and paused, finally stating “It would be an honor”. My mom on the other hand quickly responded, “Really?!” and then laughed, shed a few tears, and hugged Jon because she had already welcomed him into our crazy family. While Jon asking my parents for their blessing, I was ahead racing my brother, sisters, and cousins to get to the pool/hot tub at the Grand because it was pretty windy out.
On July 30, 2019, we came home from a relaxing day at the water park. Jon had a look on his face I had never seen before, and I thought my family finally broke him (lol). He told me he was just really relaxed and wanted to have dinner on the water just the two of us. Of course, I quickly agreed and we got ready for dinner, trying to catch the sunset on the water. We arrived at Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill and the hostess told us the wait would be about an hour. I put our name in and walked to the outside bar for pre-dinner cocktails.
Jon saw the neighboring marina (Schooner Island Marina) and asked to go watch the sunset there while we waited. I said of course because I’m always a sucker for sunsets. Jon took us in front of the water and sat me down. He knelt down beside me and said: “Can I ask you something?” I smiled and at this time my best friend asked me to spend forever with him!!! The waterworks came, and I was waiting for a “just kidding”, but then I saw the gorgeous ring and could not stop smiling! I said YES! Post-proposal, this nice lady who just got off her boat asked to take our pictures and I’m so happy we have photos to remember that night and all the feels!
As soon as we sat down back at the bar I must have been wearing it all over my face because the bartender asked if we just had gotten engaged. I still could not stop smiling and we got a bottle of champagne to celebrate! We celebrated the fact that this was the beginning of forever. Later that night we celebrated with my family. We called his family telling them the good news and later traveled to Old Forge, NY for the annual Cain camping trip! On our way to NY, we stopped at my family’s home in PA where I got to see my PopPop and tell him the good news in person. This has been the most exciting and overwhelming feeling of happiness I have ever felt, I am truly blessed to have this man as my best friend & now fiancé!
Forever’s gotta start somewhere.
(PS. During our vacation, we were both notified that we got accepted into our master’s programs at The Citadel and start classes Fall 2019!!!)
