How We Met
When people ask how we met, we look at each other, laugh, and say “work.” Which is true, but there’s so much more to the story.
Patrick and I were working for a small ship cruise company. He was an officer on board, and I was the cruise director. We came aboard the same ship on a day where we were rotating out crew, which meant there were almost twice as many officers onboard as there normally would be. I already had friends on board, so I quickly greeted Patrick, and moved on with my evening. The next day, as old guests were getting off and new ones were getting on, I watched as Patrick handled rooms changes, incorrectly documented guests, and incorrect upgrades with the grace and poise of a seasoned housekeeping manager. I knew if nothing else, I could rely on him to be a good ally for me at work.
The next night, we were docked in Norfolk, VA. It was a late night for all of us, and Patrick came into our ship’s office to ask if anybody wanted to grab pizza with him once we were all off. It was a blanket statement, but for whatever reason, he and I ended up being the only two to go out that night. As we walked along the line of restaurants near our ship, we both thought “shoot, what if this person is a dud?” Well, a shared pepperoni pizza and four hours later, we both realized that was not the case. He quickly became someone I trusted and considered a friend.
On the third night of this particular cruise, we were docked in Yorktown, VA. Patrick and I had decided to go out for onion rings after work but ended up sitting and talking on the pier until 2 in the morning, regardless of the fact that we had to be at work by 6 am. We shared stories about our lives, our deepest fears, the parts of ourselves we didn’t want anyone to know about. That was the night I truly remember realizing I was falling for this guy fast and hard.
On one of the last nights of the seven days we were on the same ship, we were docked in Washington DC. I actually remember texting my sister “I will be shocked if we don’t hold hands tonight!” As we walked along the National Mall during his first trip to DC, we shared our first kiss in front of the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.
I left for a different ship after knowing Patrick for seven days. But on day 10, he asked me to be his girlfriend! A mere 5 months later, he asked me to marry him after a surprise skydiving trip!! I am truly the luckiest woman in the world because I get to marry my very best friend, forever adventure buddy, and the love of my life!!
How They Asked
It was a random Saturday. Patrick had told me earlier in the week that he was going to take me on an adventure, but I wasn’t allowed to know what it was. With any other girl, that might seem suspicious, but this was something normal for him to do. He told me to wear something comfortable, shoes that wouldn’t fall off, and, oh yeah, “can I have your driver’s license number?”… WHAT??? I was seriously lost as to what he was up to. We drove a little way out of Phoenix to end up at a seemingly abandoned airport in Casa Grande, AZ. I was still clueless as to why we were even there. He loves planes, but I didn’t see how that was an adventure. It wasn’t until I saw the bright yellow bus with the word “SKYDIVE” written on it that I realized what we were doing! *Cue total excitement* This was something we both had on our bucket list, and as total adrenaline junkies, we were psyched to jump out of an airplane. We went up, were harnessed to our instructors, and swan-dived out of a perfectly good airplane!! As I came down, one of the instructors rushed over to undo my harness, and I started to walk towards Patrick, who had landed about 45 seconds before me.
I was so pumped full of adrenaline that I didn’t realize what was going on until I saw 2 of our best friends off to the side with roses, and the love of my life standing in front of me with a ring box. “Now that you’ve taken a leap of faith up there, will you take a leap of faith with me?” Rushed with the adrenaline of skydiving, then landing into my own proposal, I screamed YES before he could finish what he was saying!!! I couldn’t be more excited to marry this man and live a life of adventure with him! Love always comes when you least expect it, and Patrick is all the proof I need that the wait is SO worth it!
