How We Met
Marcus and I met in 2013 at a friend’s camp tucked away in the UP of Michigan. It was a summer night, right before we were parting ways for college, 7 hours apart. We dated through distance for 4 years before living together in a home that Marcus fixed up in 2017. We survived many rides in snow storms, late nights, and speeding tickets to be able to see each other on the weekends.
How They Asked
The proposal is my favorite part! Marcus and I’s biggest passion and love together is for traveling. We will take the latest flight out on a weekend and go to work on 3 hours of sleep just to sneak in a weekend vacation. On one of our most recent and longest vacations together, we traveled to Thailand and Bali, Indonesia. We spent a month together trying different foods, hiking, snorkeling, and living island life… we even managed to have me fit my month worth of belongings in a backpack. We were 5 days into the trip when I suggested to Marcus that I wanted to do a hike at 2 AM to watch the sun rise at Mt. Batur, a volcano in Bali. He didn’t hesitate, but to agree to my crazy idea. That morning we woke up at 1:30 am and hopped in a van to the location where we would be hiking. We climbed the volcano with hundreds of other crazy individuals and Marcus was leading the entire way. When we got to the top of the volcano, we changed spots 4 times before finally finding the “right sunrise view”. Marcus asked someone to take our picture and as the man was handing me my phone back, I could just hear Marcus saying “Katie” and turned around to find him on one knee, asking me to spend the rest of my life with him and the crown of other hikers saying “AWW and clapping”. When I rewrite this, I am in tears and smiles over the day we had together, followed by a $7 massage, a natural hot spring, and a steak dinner. I don’t think another sunrise or hike will ever top this one.
