Katie and Dominick

How We Met

Dom and I met while we were both attending Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Dom and I had a mutual friend that invited me to a bowling event and Dom ended up being there as well. We did not talk to each other but definitely noticed one another. A few weeks later, I briefly ran into Dom at a party. I told him how I had recognized him and introduced myself. Dom and I did not run into each other again until about a year and a half later (our last semesters in school) at the local college bar.

Dom immediately walked up to me and said, “you’re Katie right?” As the night progressed Dom asked me for my phone number, I politely turned him down telling him I had a boyfriend (which was a lie, I was just not interested in dating anyone at the time). After about a month, Dom caught on that I, in fact, did not have a boyfriend. I started to feel bad and eventually gave him my phone number, which then led to our first date.

Our date was Halloween weekend and we decided to dress up and go to a pub down the street from my college house. The date went way better than I could have imagined and ended with our first kiss. After our third date, I knew he was the one. Unfortunately, we were both about to graduate and I was taking a solo travel trip for three months. While I was away, Dom and I Facetimed every day in every new country I visited. When I returned, I flew straight into Lexington, KY where he was living at the time and he asked me to be his girlfriend.

How They Asked

Exactly two years after Dom asked me to be his girlfriend, he asked me to be his wife. Dom and I both moved to Savannah, GA where I got accepted into a graduate program last August. My college girlfriends came to visit me for St. Patrick’s Day weekend, which is a huge celebration in Savannah. I took the girls out to site see and shop while Dom was at work.

When we returned to my apartment, I saw Dom standing outside holding a big balloon in the shape of a 2 (for our 2-year anniversary). I was so confused, he told me that he wanted to do something fun for me and my friends and planned a scavenger hunt. He handed everyone a folded note that had a number on it.

The first note said, “take a picture of Katie and Dom with the 2 balloons.” At this time my friend hit record on the phone. The second note said, “Katie ask Dom what his favorite part of your relationship is?” So, I asked Dom and was in tears with how sweet his words were, I had no idea a proposal was about to happen. Next thing I knew he was asking me to spend the rest of my life with him and got down on one knee! I was in absolute shock and was a sobbing mess.

But that was not the only surprise. We were all back in the apartment when the doorbell rang. Dom answered the door to see his parents and my parents who flew down and traveled to Savannah on the busiest weekend of the year to be a part of our celebration. Once I saw my parents, I lost it even more. It was the best day of my life.
