Katie and Brian
How We Met
I met Brian for the first time at a send-off picnic for local students heading to Ohio State University. We spoke briefly (mostly because of my dad) and then headed our separate ways. A few months later, an anxious freshman searching for my textbooks at Barnes and Noble, I saw Brian again and recognized him from the picnic earlier that summer. My mom convinced the two of us to exchange phone numbers and we began a relationship that was first and foremost a friendship. We bonded over our shared hometowns in suburban Philadelphia, our love of frozen yogurt, and our ambivalence towards the college party scene (Or maybe our shared lameness?!) A few weeks later (On my 18th birthday!) Brian took me on our very first date. We dressed to the nines and walked three miles together to get ice cream – I don’t remember the ice cream, I only remember the foot blisters from the heels I was wearing and how special Brian made me feel. It was officially official – we were a couple! Over the next couple of years Brian and I shared countless “firsts” together as we navigated both college and the beginning of our adult lives together. We struggled through difficult classes together, discovered how to use public transportation together, and even accidentally attended a wedding expo together, which is proof that our engagement was meant to be…
And our very first date…
how they asked
Brian planned a whole week of fun for us in Toronto with trips to museums, aquariums, castles, and everything in between. He booked a room for us on the 41st floor of the gorgeous Delta Toronto Hotel, with a fabulous view of Lake Ontario and the city. Upon arrival to our room, I was met by a bottle of wine and chocolate covered strawberries…a perfect start to the week! He disguised the proposal by saying the trip was a graduation present, and insisted on keeping every stop on the trip a surprise. Before each activity, he read another page from a beautiful book filled with photos of us detailing what our next adventure would be. Some of the highlights included the beautiful Canadian castle Casa Loma, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and the Toronto Zoo. On Friday, Brian’s birthday, I was informed that he was treating me to a manicure, pedicure, AND a massage…I felt like royalty! I had no idea that he was strategically occupying me while he drove to the airport to pick up my younger sister Lizzie, who had flown to Toronto all by herself just to capture the proposal. Brian had found the perfect proposal site by diligently searching on Google Earth, and he decided on Scarborough Bluffs, a gorgeous park located on the Lake with sweeping views of the shoreline. Brian dropped Lizzie off at the park, where she stayed for 5 whole hours (!) making sure that the perfect spot remained unoccupied by other visitors. As Lizzie waited, Brian drove to the park and told me he wanted to show me a special spot before we went to dinner. When we got to the overlook, Brian presented me with the last page of our book and the rest is history! As Brian got down on one knee and I said YES, Lizzie snapped these gorgeous photos from her hiding spot in the woods. Lizzie, Brian, and I then celebrated over a fabulous dinner at the top of the CN Tower, in a revolving restaurant with breathtaking views of the city. I don’t think the smile left my face the whole night!
Lizzie, our wonderful photographer!
And of course…the ring!!!
