How We Met
I was eleven years old when I saw her for the first time. Katherine was the new girl at my church’s youth group and from the moment she walked in the door I couldn’t stop staring at her. I had no idea at that time, but I was about to spend the next five years of my life trying to get that girl to go out with me. I spent the rest of that night trying to impress her but no matter how hard I tried, a 7th grade boy just isn’t impressive to anyone. Weeks past before I saw her again at summer camp where I found out that she was transferring to my middle school; the best news I would have ever received! Over the next few years, in middle school and high school, every class was spent trying to make her laugh and every game my school played was used to try and impress her. We used those years to grow closer and closer and she had no idea that every move I made was planned. We always sat together at lunch, our class schedules were always the same (I had no interest in taking yearbook or art), and we always parked next to each other. I did everything I could for a few minutes here and there with her. It took many tries and lot of time to get her to agree to go on a date with me but it was worth every second of getting to know her and becoming her friend first. On November 4th, 2012 she said yes to a date, on May 5th, 2013 she told me she loved me, and on October 15th, 2017 my high school sweetheart agreed to marry me. Praise The Lord! I love you Katherine Straughan, and I cannot wait to begin this beautiful journey down God’s path with you.
how they asked
Sunday, October 15, 2017 was the day the absolute love of my life asked me to be his wife forever. Everything started when I woke up early that morning to drive to Mobile, Alabama from where I attend school because my dad said he needed to fix something on my car. I got home and my dad said the car appointment was pushed to Monday since I didn’t have to leave Mobile until Tuesday morning. (I didn’t think anything of it because I don’t know anything about cars nor that the workshop was not opened on Sundays). After getting back from my favorite lunch spot with my dad, I took a nap and woke up to my mom asking me to get ready because we’re going to this new restaurant in town. I fought and pleaded how I didn’t want to get ready because I was so sleepy and couldn’t possibly imagine getting dolled up for a dinner at this moment. Maybe 15 minutes later, I decided to respect my mother’s wishes (Praise the Lord I did)! We’re in the car and I’m doing my makeup and all of a sudden I look out the window and we are at Bellingrath Gardens, the place where I have dreamed of getting engaged since I was a little girl, and my mind starts to race. After pulling in I walked inside and saw the beautiful outfit my friends and I had discussed me wearing on the day I got engaged hanging up in the middle of the room.
There was a bouquet of flowers, a note from Eric, and a bag of essentials + a note to get ready from my friends. The note from Eric read, “Here is everything you need to get ready for the most exciting new chapter of our life. Love, E” EEK!! At this point I’m so giddy and my mom is helping me change and get ready in the bathroom! I walk out and the hostess of the garden tells me to walk this way. I come out and see the beautiful garden with 24 pictures lined up along either side of an aisle with another picture frame next to each one with one thing he loves most about me and his favorite thing about that memory.
Finally, my sweet Eric comes out from behind an oak tree and we embraced each other like never before. We began to walk down the aisle that lead to a table under an iron bridge that had my favorite picture of us (he asked me a while back- so thoughtful). There was a marriage and family Bible that he had my new initials engraved on the front with 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 highlighted, the Bible verse about love that exemplifies every reason why we have chosen one another. From what I can remember from being in awe, he tells me of how far we have come since high school and how sovereign the Lord has been over our lives together.
He tells me of the future we’re going to have and the sacred journey of marriage we are about to go through as one in Christ; that this moment only represents that next step into what is going to be the very best day of our lives – our wedding day. He starts to pray over our soon to be marriage and future kids and that everything we do reflects the love of Jesus and our eternal purpose of why we are here on Earth.
The rest of the evening was filled with amazing friends and family who welcomed us back at my house for a celebration. Looking back afterwards I connected all of the dots that were done behind the scenes to make that day perfect. About a week before Eric asked, my recruiter with the accounting firm I just accepted a job with reached out wanting to have a celebratory nail day with me in Birmingham, AL but really Eric had reached out to her to plan this so I wouldn’t be suspicious of getting my nails done. There was so much thought and love that was poured into that day to make it everything I had dreamed of – well done E. Jesus is so sweet to give me you.
