How We Met
Ras and I met six years ago at work. We both worked at a pub in my hometown of Excelsior, Minnesota. He was the Executive Chef and I was a food runner. I didn’t like any of the guys there that were my age but I had my eye on him for a while. He’s ten years older than me so I never really thought he would be interested. A year after I had started working there, he asked me on a date. We became close friends pretty fast even though the two of us have very different personalities. Ras is intense, hard working, and outgoing, I’m a little more sensitive and laid back. I keep him grounded and he makes sure to remind me to keep my head in the clouds sometimes. But we both have equally encouraged each other over the past five and a half years. About a year after we started dating I got really sick. I couldn’t go out anymore, I couldn’t exercise, and I had to quit my job as a hairstylist. He supported me emotionally through health issues and my decision to go back to school. I encouraged and supported him a year ago when he decided to change career paths. We’ve both learned throughout the years that life is never going to be what we expect, but we’ve grown so much together through it all. I wouldn’t change what we have for the world.
how they asked
Ras and I have been together for over five years so we’d known for a while that we wanted to get married. I’ve been trying to finish up my undergrad at UMN and I have about a year and a half left, so we figured we’d wait until after I was done to get married. We had looked at rings once a few years ago but I honestly wasn’t expecting anything for another year. I also assumed I would see it coming. I didn’t.
On Sunday morning, November 8th we had planned to go for a quick run from my apartment and then come back and make breakfast. After that, we were going to part ways because I had a lot of studying to do for an upcoming exam. While we were stretching, Ras looked up and said, “I want to go to Hyland Park and run on the trails.” I looked at him like he was nuts, and retorted with, “No. I have way too much to do today. Find another day to do it.” But he was persistent and incredibly optimistic as usual that it would be such a fun adventure, so I begrudgingly obliged and walked out to the car with him. I sat with my arms folded, looking out the window the entire time. When he reached over to grab my hand to try and make me smile, I exploded with, “I’m mad at you. I had plans to be responsible and take care of my studies today and you want to have an adventure. You aren’t taking my responsibilities seriously at all!” I literally started to tear up because I was so overwhelmed. He grabbed my hand and said, “Quick fun run, I promise it will be awesome and then we’ll get you home!”
We arrived at the park and because I had been there previously, I knew exactly where to go to get to the good part of the trail. I started to walk briskly to warm up. And when I looked back to see where Ras was, I noticed he was standing by this tree. I yelled back to tell him to hurry up and he said, “Come here! I need to stretch!” I grumbled under my breath that we had already stretched and I didn’t know why he needed to do it again. When I got over to him, he pulled me in to hug me like he always does when I’m in a grouchy mood. I noticed his heart was beating so hard and fast so I leaned back and asked, “Oh my gosh babe, are you okay? Did you have too much coffee?” He proceeded to grab both my hands, look into my eyes and say, “Katherine, you are my best friend in the entire world, and I love you so much.” I assumed he was just trying to get me to smile so I actually pushed his hand away and said, “Stop it! You sound like you’re proposing!” It wasn’t until he was down on one knee that I realized what was even happening. I kept saying, “Oh my gosh, what are you doing? What are you doing?! What is happening right now?” He then asked me the question that would change my life forever. He reached down into the leaves next to him and pulled out a little wooden box and asked, “Will you marry me, Katherine?” I was shaking and couldn’t even speak, I was so shocked. The ring was the one from Brilliant Earth that I sent a million Instagram screenshots to him a year prior. When I was finally able to speak I said, “Oh my gosh, Yes!” I hugged and kissed him and then asked him, “Did you ask my parents?” When he responded with, “Yes, I talked to them both on Wednesday,” I totally lost it and burst into tears. It was then that I realized that he had this entire thing planned and made it all look like he did it on a whim. It was perfect. I’ve never been so surprised in my life.
Which brings me to another great part. He had an accomplice. Ras’s best friend had been there twenty minutes prior to our arrival. He planted the ring and was standing behind some trees taking pictures of the entire thing. I had no idea. It was the greatest surprise to just have that moment to remember forever, but now we have something to remind us always of that incredible day. He gave us the photos last night in a beautiful frame and it’s already hanging on the wall this morning. I tear up every time I look at it and thank God for the blessing it is to have Rasdaniel in my life. Thanks for changing my world forever, babe. I love you.
