How We Met
Michael and I met in the Financial District while I was taking a break from studying for the Bar Exam.
How They Asked
In August 2021, Michael and I landed in New Orleans, LA for our first trip since the pandemic started. We were greeted at the airport by cell phone alerts for a quickly approaching tropical storm which soon developed into Hurricane Ida.
Unbeknownst to me, Michael had more than the storm on his mind. Michael had planned an epic proposal that was being threatened by the category 4 hurricane. In between calls to rental car companies, and various airlines, Michael stuck to the original plan…
In a record store on Decatur Street, among Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino vinyl, Michael hid a record with songs depicting the milestones of our story thus far, and when I came across the record, Michael got down on one knee. The rain held off for a couple of hours and gave us an opportunity to celebrate in the streets!
Despite our efforts, we were unable to evacuate the city of New Orleans ahead of the storm. On August 29th, the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Ida made landfall and caused catastrophic damage. Without power, sewage, or running water, Michael and I were shown the resiliency of a community that we’ve grown to love and that our love is stronger than hurricane winds.
