How We Met
After growing up in Ohio and attending college at the University of Michigan, I was ready for a new adventure. On a whim, I moved to NYC and found myself living in a tiny apartment in the Lower East Side with five roommates. Aside from sharing clothes, we became best friends- spending our nights and weekends together. And thus, we bonded with each other’s boyfriends. My roommate Zoe was dating a man named Jerome. One cold January night, Jerome and Zoe convinced me to come listen to a taping of the Moth podcast. Unbeknownst to be me, Jerome brought his very tall and very bearded friend named Colin. The line was long and we never did get into the Moth. Instead, we ate tacos and chatted about life. That night, I told Zoe that I wished I could be with someone like him. And my wish came true! The next week, he asked me to grab a doughnut and from that moment on, we have been inseparable. Colin has been my rock during a very difficult time- a year after we started dating, my father passed away from colon cancer. Before he passed, Colin had asked my father for my hand in marriage. My father loved Colin and his approval meant everything to me. Colin is one of the happiest, kindest people I’ve ever met and I feel grateful every day to be with him. We’ve been dating for three years now and engaged for about two months. He is my best friend and the best reason why I could have ended up in NYC.
how they asked
Colin and I were long overdue for a vacation, just the two of us. We debated for months about where to go and settled on Copenhagen and Stockholm, as we both love art, design and a good fika. From the first day of our trip on, Colin had filled the itinerary with surprises. He had secretly booked a hotel and had a planned a full agenda for our last day in Copenhagen. When I woke up that morning, Colin asked me to name one of my friends. He then proceeded to give me a letter written by that friend. And then, every hour throughout the day, he gave me an envelope from a close friend or family member about love, our relationship and friendship. That morning we biked to a Nordic spa and in the afternoon we made our way to the Louisiana Modern Art Museum, about 30 minutes outside of Copenhagen. We spent the day wandering around the grounds and admiring the art. When the sun started to set, Colin brought me to a dock outside of the museum overlooking Sweden. He gave me the final letter, written by him. The note read “Turn around” and he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him- and through my tears I said “yes”!
The next day, we traveled to Stockholm. Colin had secretly arranged a photographer and we had a full photo shoot as an engaged couple. It was the most special trip I could have asked for and we were over the moon excited to share the news with our friends and family.
