How We Met
It was 2015, and I was in a relationship that should have been over a long time ago. One thing that made me happy was going on jogs with Michael. When my relationship ended, I was heartbroken but still went on runs with Michael to keep myself busy. One day we decided to go to the Huntington Library in Pasadena and on the car ride there I talked about all of these “qualifications” I was going to have for my next relationship like being with someone who enjoyed the same hobbies me, had a good job, interested in my beliefs and liked going on small trips my list went on and then he stopped me and said so basically me but someone a little taller (I’m a little taller). I looked at him awkwardly and said yes.
After this, I realized that I was being dumb, for all I know Michael could be a fantastic partner and I was going to turn him down because he’s a little shorter than me?! We went to the Huntington Library in Pasadena and had so much fun. We laughed, took photos and Michael even brought me to the church nearby where his parents got married. At the church, a sense of calmness came over me. Michael said a prayer for me at the church hoping that I would find someone who could give me the same amount of joy and love that I bring into the world and after that, I pretty much was all in. Michael and I have been together ever since, and he really is my dream guy.
How They Asked
I had just finished my first year of graduate school, and I was so excited for the much needed time off. Michael planned for our parents to meet that weekend at the Huntington Library, and I was nervous and excited about it all. I thought maybe this could be the day that he proposes to me?! On the way there we started talking about being engaged, and Michael told me “Kassandra I’m sorry I have not had time to plan an engagement after my school year is over I promise I have something planned” (he’s a 2nd-grade teacher).
I was a little sad after his remark, but I was still happy that our parents were meeting and that it was such a beautiful day to be out. Everyone was acting completely normal, and I was delighted that everyone was getting along. We were walking through a museum, and then Michael’s mom said she had to use the bathroom. The closest bathroom was by the rose garden. Michael’s mom told us to meet her there which I thought was weird, but we all planned to go there after so we started walking over there and looking at all of the beautiful roses that were in bloom, and I was so happy because they were all so lovely and fragrant.
A side note, when Michael and I first went to the Huntington Library and looked at the roses, we saw one that said passionate kiss, so we took a funny picture in front of it. Now, we always look at the odd names of flowers because of this moment. So there I was walking along with the roses and looking at the different signs when I came across some beautiful ones Michael was standing close to and when I looked down at the sign I gasped, It said: “Kassandra WILL YOU MARRY ME?” I could not believe that it was happening, I turned around to look at our families and my two close friends who had come out to surprise me, and I was in shock. Michael was down on one knee and asked me If I would marry him and I said “yesss oh my gosh, it’s beautiful!’ All of sudden I heard some clicks and found that there was a photographer there! She was so sweet and took some photos of us later.
Before we reunited with our families, Michael wanted to share with me what he wanted to say when he was proposing to me. One of my favorite romantic comedies is When Harry Met Sally, so he wrote this. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, and the thing is, I love you. I love the way you aren’t afraid to send back food if it tastes bad. I love how you always save room for dessert with every meal. I love how you always want to cuddle with me.
I love how I wake up full of energy every morning because I get to talk to you on my drive to work. I’ve known since our first date together that I want to spend the rest of my life with you so, Kassandra, will you marry me? I am so excited I get to marry someone so thoughtful and better than any man I could have ever dreamed of. Oh and to top it all off he planned a surprise proposal party with some close family and friends at one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. I am so incredibly lucky and blessed.
