Karrie and Gavin
How We Met
Gavin and I first met at a trail ride in April of 2014. Riding horses is just one of the many things we both enjoy to do. I never expected him to have such an impact on my life. We were on and off for about a year until April 2015 when we ended things. In August 2015 I decided to send him a snapchat of my horse. Gavin always tells me that from that moment he knew that I was the one and that he wasn’t letting me get away again. He was ready to be serious and settle down and he knew it was going to be with me. I was entering into my junior year at NC State and he lives a little over an hour outside of the city. We began hanging out again and going on dates when my semester started.
He did most of the traveling coming to Raleigh at least once a week, usually more. On September 6, 2015 he asked me to be his girlfriend and I said yes, even though I was still unsure that we would work out. The more time I spent with Gavin, the more I realized how in love with him I was. The first time he told me he loved me, my heart melted. We were laying in bed and he woke up from his sleep, said those three little words, and fell right back asleep. I knew he meant it, and I knew I loved him too. He’s the tough guy type but is always so sweet to me. He spoils me and treats me way better than I deserve. I fell so in love with this man so quickly. It amazed me how I could love someone so much in such a short amount of time, but I knew that I had found the man I would marry.
We always talked about our future, about getting married and having children. We talked about where we would live, the names of our potential children, how many dogs we would have, and basically everything. In April 2016 the future got a whole lot closer as we found out we were going to parents. We were both so excited and still are. I can’t imagine starting a family with anyone else. At that point, I figured it would be a while before we got engaged because we needed to save money for our little baby boy.
how they asked
Every year on Halloween weekend there is a big trail ride in Love Valley, NC. It is a beautiful place in the foothills with beautiful views, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing. We made plans to spend the weekend riding horses there with our friends. We rented a cabin, packed everything up and were on our way. On Saturday we saddled up and rode out like we normally would. When we got up to the top of a hill looking out over a beautiful view, we stopped riding to take a break like most people do at this spot.
There was probably about 40 people stopped at this spot already, many of which were our friends. Gavin asked to take a picture with me, so I got off my horse and went over to the edge of the hill and posed with him. Two of our really good friends took our picture and when they said “got it” I turned to walk away. That’s when Gavin dropped to one knee and pulled out my dream ring.
He said “I love you” and I was so caught up in the moment that I don’t remember what else. I started nodding yes immediately. I couldn’t stop the tears from pouring down my face as I pulled him up to hug and kiss him. I didn’t even let him put the ring on before I hugged him, I couldn’t wait. The only thing I wanted in that moment was to be in the arms of the man I was going to get to spend the rest of my life with.
He asked if he could put the ring on and I held out my shaking hand for him to slide the ring on my finger. All of our friends were hugging us and congratulating us; I have never felt so much love at one time. My heart was so happy. That was a moment I will never forget. I am so excited to be starting a family with the sweetest, most loving man I could ever imagine.
