Karla and Kevin
how they asked
I love mystery games, and Kevin knew that. I was planning a get-together with my former colleagues turned close friends at this Mystery game at this one mall which I felt was a bit far but I was all game for it. I was especially into it since it was a Harry Potter-themed mystery game, which they only had in that particular branch/mall. At one point in the game, my best friend Erika and I got stuck in one of those hidden rooms. We tried getting out but it was locked, and someone called one of the gamekeepers to have it unlocked. We still tried opening it from the inside. At one point it worked, but Erika pushed the door closed, which I thought was accidental. When it opened a second time, I was able to see some rose petals on the floor before she pushed it closed again. That’s when I got suspicious. I asked her what she was doing, she says she doesn’t know, but she had a guilty smile on her. When the gamekeeper said the door was open, we open it and the room was dark.
I see Kevin standing at the bottom of the steps, rose petals and tea candles leading the way to him and him standing in the middle of a string of lights forming a heart. “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran was playing in the background when he knelt down and asked me to marry him. After I say yes, the lights go on, everyone cheers, and I look at the screen with the countdown timer. It said “She said yes! CONGRATULATIONS!” And “23 Minutes” and I was like “we still have 23 minutes to solve and finish the game!” The game master had to say “mystery solved” and they told me the game wasn’t a real one because Erika and Kevin already played it for them to figure out how to set up the proposal. In our three years together and four years of knowing each other, this was literally the first time ever that he was able to surprise me without me finding out that there was something going on. But when we were talking about it after, literally everyone, including my family and best friends, knew about it beforehand, and that’s when I started seeing the clues.
