How We Met
Edan and I met on a dating site. I had always been wary of online dating but my best friend met her now fiancé online and inspired me to give it a try. Growing up, I never had felt confident enough to “put myself out there” and go on dates. I was born with cerebral palsy, and I think partly because of that I was self conscious at times. But I knew that I wanted to get married one day. And I knew that whoever I met would have to understand that, in some ways, I would be different because of my disability. When Edan and I met in person, I realized that we had a lot of the same values.
We both were serious about pursuing marriage in a real and intentional way. We started dating in December of 2015. But we were both unsure still in some ways, because he was (and still is) a very physically active person. One of his biggest hobbies is mountain biking. And I had never been able to ride even a regular bicycle because of balance issues. But Edan is the type of person who will do all he can to adapt and make things work. Two months into dating, he bought a tandem bicycle for us to ride together. He said that he wanted me to experience the thrill of mountain biking. And both the biking and the relationship has certainly been a thrill!
how they asked
On August 23, we took some much needed time off of work for a six-day trip out west. I had never been any further west than Indiana and was super excited! We did a lot of fun things on the trip! We rode our tandem bike through the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, visited Zion National Park in Utah, and hiked down into the Grand Canyon, to name a few. But the best moment of the whole trip came on August 25, when he surprised me with a hot air balloon early in the morning in Sedona. The views were breathtaking and it was such a cool experience taking a balloon flight for the first time!
In the middle of the flight, Edan got down on one knee in the tiny basket and asked me to marry him! Of course, I said yes! Luckily, before he asked, he had one of the other balloon passengers take his phone so that the big moment could be captured with video and photos. But even if that moment had not been filmed, it will be a moment that I will never forget!
