Kara and Tom
How We Met
Tom and I met on the first day of college. We both had the same class on our first day and we both arrived way too early. I originally entered college as an acting major, and later changed it, but I automatically assumed he was also an acting major. I started talking about all the theatrical work and acting training I had done, like literally speaking my resume at him, and he clearly was not into it; but I thought he was cute so I kept talking. As the weeks went on, I casually announced to the class during an exercise that I was newly single and again got no reaction so I decided to take matters into my own hands.
I asked him to tutor me on music theory, something I super did not need to know, and we were supposed to meet for lunch for our first tutoring session where I planned to win him over with my charming personality. A few days before we were supposed to meet I saw him kissing another girl in the lobby our arts building and I’m definitely not the type of girl who would interfere with anyone’s relationship. So I cancelled the tutoring lunch date and moved on with my cliche’ freshman year college experience. Over the summer I had accepted an internship with a theater company in his home town and he found out through my co-workers that I worked there. One night while I was cleaning up post-show he texted me and told me he was in the parking lot. I very quickly grabbed my belongings and met him outside, thanking the sweet Lord above that I wore makeup and did my hair that day.
I walked out the loading dock door and he was sitting on the back on his car with two bottles of coca-cola and a bottle of Bacardi Oak-Heart. In the most college way ever, we dumped out 1/3 of the bottles of cokes to make mixed drinks and drank them while we talked in a dark parking lot. We continued to talk all night about anything and everything. We even learned that we both used to play golf and we both love ferrets. I kept inching towards him hoping he would kiss me, but he’s the most gentlemanly man I have ever met and never did. At around 3:00 am he told me he had work in four hours and I made him go home and sleep. However, not without promising to take me out for real. We had our first date a few days later and the rest is history.
how they asked
I have always been obsessed with Disney. Who wouldn’t want to be in a world where you’re a Princess and good always prevails? I had planned a Disney trip for the two of us as my graduation present but unfortunately we had to cancel the trip due to unforeseen circumstances. I have been to both Disneyland and Disney World with my best friend but I wanted to share the magic and everything I loved so much with Tom. We both graduated college, secured full time jobs and moved into our first apartment. To celebrate I planned a trip to Disney World for the two of us. I made reservations for a beautiful restaurant at my favorite resort; Narcoossee’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian. I requested firework view seats but when the fireworks started people ended up standing in front of our seats so we walked to the outside balcony to watch them. During “Wishes”, the fireworks show, Snow White says “I wish my prince would come” and he grabbed me by the waist and said “your prince is already here”. I giggled and kissed him and went back to watching the show. Jiminey Cricket then goes on to explain how powerful the magic of a wish is. A few weeks prior we had gone to New York City to see the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and I was adamant about going to Times Square to fill out the New Year’s Wish confetti. Every year there’s a booth in Times Square that lets you write your New Years wish on a piece of confetti that will be dropped with the ball at midnight.
I wouldn’t let me look at mine and made him fill his out on the opposite table. I wished for a Disney engagement even thought I didn’t think it was a possibility. When I asked him what he wished for he said “a really good burrito”. We laughed and went downtown to have dinner at our favorite restaurant. Now back at Disney, he spun me towards him and said “Do you know what my real New Years wish was?” and when I said no he pulled the ring box out his jacket pocket, opened it up, and said “that you would say yes”. I’m almost positive I blacked out because I can barely recall what happened next. He got down on one knee as fireworks were going off behind us and before he could get out “will you marry me?” I said yes and pulled him up to kiss him. He then asked me again and I allowed him to finish his sentence this time. We watched the rest of the fireworks holding each other, beaming with happiness, and completely shocked.
My proposal was so perfect because even though it was in Disney World it was so private and personal. Barely anyone around us noticed and we stood there kissing, laughing, and saying how much we loved each other in our own little world where it was just the two of us in love. We finished our dinner and then a friend of mine came by to take pictures of us in the resort. There was a jazz band playing love songs and we danced overlooking the lobby in my favorite area of my favorite place. I couldn’t imagine a better proposal or a better man to spend the rest of my life with.
