How We Met
Bobby and I had our first date on February 17th, 2014 (or February 16th, we can’t agree on the date!) when we were 22 and not even out of college for a full year. We shared apps at Cuban Pete’s, a staple in Montclair where I was living in my first apartment). We felt an instant connection and we were immediately comfortable with each other. One date led to another and soon we were talking on the phone every night that they weren’t together. Over the next two and a half years, we got closer with each other and with our friends and families. We spent our weekends at Bobby’s flag football games or my infamous family Sunday lunches. We took weekend trips and hikes around New York. Everything was simply better when we were together. We started to make plans for our future. We always acknowledged how lucky we were to have found each other. From the very beginning, there was an undeniable spark. Nothing came more naturally than loving each other – quirks and all.
how they asked
On September 17, 2016 (Bobby’s birthday and my parents’ wedding anniversary) I had planned a surprise birthday party at one of our favorite spots – Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten. I had planned a day of deep sea fishing for stripers and blues with Bobby, his brother, Brian, and his girlfriend, Courtney. It was a great day! We checked into our hotel and freshened up for dinner. I (being the truly horrible liar I am) “casually” mentioned that the four of us should go to the rooftop at Biergarten after dinner. I thought I was going to really surprise him when we walked in to see all of his friends there to celebrate him. Little did I know, Bobby had secretly visited my parents a few days beforehand and asked for my hand in marriage. While we were fishing all day, Bobby was practicing his proposal in his head. When we went to dinner, he was sweating and nervously pacing in the men’s room while frantically texting his best friend, Anthony, to confirm the details of his surprise proposal! He had hijacked my surprise party and turned it into the best proposal ever.
My favorite story from the night was when Bobby was pacing nervously in the men’s room talking on the phone with his best friend, Anthony. A random stranger in the stall overheard him and said “Hey, man, congrats!” Bobby, Brian, Courtney and I then walked to the rooftop and as we entered, everyone shouted “Surprise!” and took pictures. At exactly that moment, Bobby turned to me with a knowing smile and walked me into an empty corner of the rooftop, right as the sun was setting. When he started to bend down on one knee, I felt my stomach drop and my heart start racing. Bobby told me that I was the best birthday present he could ever ask for and asked me to marry him.
Floating on clouds and with my brain going a mile a minute, I immediately started crying and squeaked a “Yes!” before he picked me up and kissed me. It was the best moment of my life.
