How We Met

Chris and I met in March 2015. At the time I was in grad school in Maryland and had been going through a lot in my personal life; college graduation, moving away from all my friends, and my parent’s divorce. I was having a quarter life crisis and I was unfortunately in a bit of a post-college-going-on-three-tinder-dates-a-week phase. I was not really interest in getting into a relationship, especially one that would turn out to be long distance. It was my spring break and I decided to take a spontaneous trip to visit my friend from home, who was in law school at Penn State. When I got there, she promptly showed me the Facebook pages of a couple cute friends she had that she thought I would get along with, one of which was Chris’s. I remember thinking that he was tall and had beautiful eyes. Fast forward a few hours and we headed to the Phyrst, a pretty popular State College bar. I saw Chris sitting across the bar and Andrea walked over to introduce us as I awkwardly pretended like I didn’t know exactly who he was.

An hour or so later, we started talking and realized how much we had in common. He was super goofy and kept me laughing the whole time. According to him, I am one of the only girls who has ever laughed at his jokes. He asked if I wanted to take a shot of Jameson and in order to look “cool” I pretended like I didn’t absolutely hate whiskey. He still makes fun of me because he could clearly tell I did not enjoy that decision. At the end of the night, he found the real way to my heart, nachos. We exchanged numbers and I’ve never looked back. Even though we never thought it would work out with long distance, he has surprised me over and over again. Shortly after we started dating, he had an internship in Texas and he asked me to take the 20+ hour road trip with him.

I can’t say I expected it to go well, but it was the most fun I have ever had with anyone. When I started applying to medical school last year, he was nothing but supportive even though there was a very small chance of our paths crossing in the long term. However, fate stepped in. Last year, Chris was accepted into the Navy JAG program to become a lawyer in the Navy and I was accepted to Uniformed Services University to become a Navy doctor the next week. It has been a whirlwind over the past two years, but I wouldn’t change a thing. He has become my best friend and has helped me to become the person I always wanted to be.

how they asked

For my spring break, Chris and I along with two of my good friends headed to Iceland. It was a pretty spontaneous decision, but we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Chris had never been out of the country so when he was being weird (and I mean extremely weird) in the couple weeks before the trip, I assumed that it was just due to stress. To be honest, he was driving me a little crazy.

On the second day of our trip we decided to drive along the south coast to see a couple of the larger waterfalls. We arrived at the first one, Seljalandfoss, and Chris immediately started mumbling about how we needed to take a couples picture because we never take enough. He decided that the best place would be behind the waterfall and began (very quickly) walking in that direction. To be honest, I am terrified of heights and am not extremely outdoorsy. To get behind the waterfall, you had to climb down some pretty slippery rocks. He quickly did this, while I was freaking out about falling into the waterfall. So naturally, I started complaining about how he didn’t wait for me or help me down the rocks. Luckily, my friends were there to help me face my fears and I successfully made it to a landing behind the waterfall. I handed my friend Lydia my phone so she could take this couple picture that was apparently so important and walked over to Chris. As I got closer, I could see he was already crying and instantly I knew what was going on. Even though he apparently had a whole speech planned, he only got out the words “I love you so much. You’re my best friend.” before dropping down onto one knee. I instantly started crying and shook my head yes!

It turns out, that the engagement was stressing him out and hence all the weirdness. While, I knew he had been looking at rings in the past, I didn’t see it coming at all. As all of my friends will tell you, I was convinced that I would know if he was actually up to anything. It turns out that all of my friends and family had known for months and had quite a good time messing with me. I am know really doubting my ability to know if people are lying to me.

To put the icing on the cake, I had always told him that I wanted my friends and family there when I got engaged to celebrate with. While they didn’t make it to Iceland, he planned a surprise engagement party for the day we got back so we could celebrate with everyone! It was such a beautiful trip and being surrounded by our friends and family was so special!
