How We Met

We often get asked the question “If you are from Colorado and live in North Dakota and he is from Kentucky, how did you meet?” Well, we met on October 23, 2015 in the Washington DC airport on our way to a medical mission trip in Malawi, Africa. Chris is a Registered Nurse with a BSN degree. He went on a medical mission trip to Peru in college and loved it, so he spent time searching medical missions to Africa. I (Kaitlyn) am a Youth Director with a music education degree. I read a book about a girl moving to Africa and then jumped at the chance to join a group of nurses going to Africa from my church. I noticed Chris right away: he was the one guarding all of the suitcases while people checked in. He seemed uninterested in my attempts to make small talk at first, but when our flight to Ethiopia was delayed for 12 hours, we became fast friends. We gathered some of our fellow travelers and started playing games in the airport to pass the time. By the grace of God, we ended up sitting next to each other on the 4 hour flight from Ethiopia to Malawi. After talking and laughing the whole time, we were excited about the ‘African Experience’ which was about to unfold.

how they asked

After successfully convincing me that there was no way we could get engaged any time too soon, Chris had planned a special date for us. We started our date in Grand Forks, ND, where he gave me a card. In the card was a wonderful note (my love language!) and an address to another location. We then went to Lucky 13’s, which is the only restaurant in Fargo which serves the Juicy Lucy, a burger invented in Minneapolis, MN – his previous travel nursing location. Again, he gave me a card with a note and another address (this would become a theme). The next address led us to Chipotle (my favorite restaurant, and the only place we ate that day, for the record!) to remind us of the cruise we took to Mexico over the summer. Then we went to Starbucks, which opened in Washington State (and Chris got to visit the original one while he was there!) to represent his very first travel nursing location. The next addresses took us to KFC for Chris’s home state of Kentucky, and to the Fargodome for my current city of Fargo, ND. The final address took us to the Red River Zoo to represent that very first trip to Africa. The animals may not be the same (no elephants or lions in Fargo), but we love visiting zoos. He had staged my old roommate and her friend to take pictures, and took my hands, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him! He didn’t know if he actually used those words, but I’m positive he did. And, of course, I said yes!
