Kailey and Chandler
How We Met
I met Chandler through a mutual friend a little over a year ago. He later told me that on our first date, as I stepped out of the car and he saw me for the first time, the first thought that popped into his head was, “this woman is going to be my wife”. At the time, it shocked him because he wasn’t the type to think something like that. I, on the other hand, wasn’t wanting to get into anything serious. Earlier that summer, I had made a list in my prayer journal of qualities that I wanted in a husband. I had decided that I wasn’t going to be serious with anyone until I found someone who met those characteristics. I tried multiple times to shake Chandler, but he was always persistent. The more time we spent together, the more I began to notice that all of the qualities I had written down were apparent in him.
Aside from meeting the qualities on my list, he showed me things I wanted in a husband that I didn’t even know I wanted. He was adventurous, I can’t begin to count the number of times my grandma and mother were scared for their lives when we would go hiking mountains and they would see pictures of us jumping from one plateau to another. He pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me how to drive a four-wheeler, shoot a gun, change a tire, start a fire, rock climb, golf, and ride a mountain bike. He wanted to spoil me but also wanted to teach me to be independent.
Later that fall, he got really sick suddenly and was in the hospital for several weeks with pancreatitis. Normal lipase levels are under 200, his levels were at 7,000. I saw the strongest man I know, at his weakest. It was then I realized I wanted to love and take care of him for the rest of my life. I couldn’t imagine my life without him. Little did I know, he began ring shopping and planning a proposal while in the hospital. He bought a custom ring soon after and planned to take me to Rome to propose at the Fountain of Love.
how they asked
As summer came around again, I was getting antsy. I knew our big trip to Greece and Italy was coming soon. I thought we were just going to celebrate his college graduation and his little brother’s high school graduation. I had hoped he would propose since this was a once in a lifetime trip but didn’t want to get my hopes up. I actually cried several nights before we left because I had convinced myself there was no way he was going to propose. Boy, he had me fooled.
After a two-day flight, we arrived in Rome, Italy. We didn’t have a chance to shower, and changed in a hotel bathroom before setting out to see the city. I was surviving solely off of dry shampoo and fabric freshener. We hadn’t slept in over 48 hours. After a long day of seeing the city, we arrived at our last stop, the Trevi Fountain.
I was pumped and had been looking forward to seeing it all day. We walked up and there were thousands of people. I was determined to get to the front of the fountain though, so we pushed our way through until we were at the very front. I asked him to take a picture of me and our friend Erin in front of the fountain. I then asked Erin if she would take a picture of me and Chandler. I was busy making sure she was high enough to see us over all of the people when Chandler leaned over and told me he loved me. I casually told him I loved him too and went back to trying to position Erin so she could see us. He then got on the other side of me and asked me to come here. I turned to him and he got down on one knee. My oblivious self-thought that he was going to pick me up for a picture in front of the fountain. So I put my arms out for him to lift me up. I was thinking, “man he’s getting super creative for this picture.” He then pulled out a box and asked me to marry him. I was in complete shock, I lowered my arms and stared at him in disbelief, then began to cry happy tears. I GET TO MARRY THIS MAN!
I said yes and he stood up and kissed me deeply, with tears running down my face. Everyone at the fountain stopped and began clapping for us. It didn’t feel real! We then realized he hadn’t even put the ring on my finger, and I quickly slipped it on and went back to smiling like an idiot at my future husband. We then celebrated our engagement the rest of the week by visiting various Greek islands including Mykonos, Hydra, Kotor, as well as Athens and London, England. It was the trip of a lifetime, but I’m more excited to finally marry Chandler this fall!!
