Justine and Zachary
How We Met
I was only a junior in high school when I met Justine. I always knew who she was, but I had never talked to her or hung out with the same group of friends since she was in the class above me. After a big high school football win, I was at a party with some of my fellow team mates when Justine and some of her friends arrived. After an intense game of ping pong, I managed to get her phone number before she left. I wasn’t really looking for a relationship at the time, but I realized very quickly that there was something incredibly special about Justine. I was able to connect with her at such a meaningful level that I had never connected with anyone else before. After a few weeks of talking, we decided to go to a haunted house together with some friends.
I remember how cold that night was and how close she was wrapped around me under my letter jacket as we stood outside waiting for our turn to go through the haunted house. After some scares and laughs, we headed back to a friends house where I later asked her to be my girlfriend. I could have never imagined that in that moment, my life would be forever changed. Being high school sweethearts, we have had to literally learn how to grow up and become adults together. Our journey has been challenging, romantic, terrifying, loving, and so so much fun. She has made me a better man, and for that, I am forever grateful.
how they asked
Justine had begged me into doing an all-inclusive trip to Jamaica. She has always loved the beach, but we had never been out of the country together. I knew this was going to be a special trip. After some close calls, I was able to get the ring through airport security and Jamaican customs. On our third night, I had made fake reservations at the nicest restaurant on the resort. I told her before we go to dinner that we should go get pictures by the sunset on the beach since we were all dressed up. I walked her down to the beach where a Jamaican man took our last pictures as boyfriend and girlfriend together. When I was walking her back to our room, we looked off to our left to see a trail of rose pedals and candles that led down to a gazebo on the beach.
As we walked by, I took her hand and began walking down the trail of rose pedals. She gave me a look like I was crazy. I told her I loved her and that I had something I needed to ask her. She immediately knew what was happening as tears began streaming down her face. I walked her under the gazebo by the Jamaican sunset. I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me.
She said, “Of course!” as she sobbed. I don’t think I had ever seen her as happy as we were in that moment.
After the proposal I broke the news that we were not having dinner at the nicest restaurant on the resort. Instead we had an amazing, private, candlelit dinner on the beach under the stars as we watched a storm out over the ocean. The night was perfect in every way, and I am the luckiest man on earth!
