How We Met
I wish we had one of those stories that makes people go “aww” as soon as they listen to it, but unfortunately we do not. Actually? Scratch that. The story of how Josh and I met is one that describes our relationship perfectly, and I would not have it any other way. Back when we were young kids in high school, me 16 and him 17, Josh worked at the local McDonald’s. One day, I went into McDonald’s with my friend, and we happened to know one of the other guys who was working. We all started up a conversation and all of a sudden Josh, who obviously felt comfortable enough to just butt in, started talking to the three of us also. Now, if any of you know what the 2010 McDonald’s uniform looked like, you would know that Josh was not dressed to impress, and it was far from love at first sight.
If I am being honest, I had no idea who this random guy was and why he thought it would be okay to just start talking to us like he knew us. Fast forward to that evening, and my friend that I was with all day said she got a message from some guy named Josh who was at McDonald’s that day. Josh messaged my friend saying, “Who was your friend with the nice “assets”? Is she single?” which is so funny because today, Josh would never say anything like that but I love that it is where we started. When my friend told me about the message, I laughed it off and rolled my eyes and didn’t think twice about it. A few days later, something happened and I randomly thought about the message that Josh had sent my friend a few days beforehand. I decided to message him back, and we have not missed a day of talking ever since.
how they asked
After five years of dating, Josh and I have become best friends, confidantes, and each other’s favorite travel partner. We had talked about going to Europe for a while, so when Josh suggested a trip to London and Paris, I thought nothing of it. In planning our trip, Josh came up with the idea that he wanted to take nice pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower while we were in Paris, and of course I agreed (because what girl doesn’t want pictures in front of something as spectacular as the Eiffel Tower?!). Fast forward to when we were in Paris. The night before the proposal, Josh took me to a spot near the Eiffel Tower called Trocadéro. Trocadéro has such an amazingly breathtaking view of the Eiffel Tower, but it is pretty well known so it is often crowded. While we were there, we saw a couple get engaged, to which Josh responded by leaning over to me and saying, “This is way too cliché, I would never propose here,” and knowing Josh, I completely believed him. That night, we sat at Trocadéro, ate chocolate filled crepes, and watched the Eiffel Tower sparkle in the night. It was perfect. When we got back to the hotel, Josh informed me that he wanted to take our pictures at sunrise the next morning because he wanted to avoid the crowds.
I am not usually a morning person, but I reluctantly agreed because I wanted to take the best picture possible. I’m not sure what it was (whether it be jet-lag, anxiety, or just the butterflies in our stomachs from being in Paris), but at 4 am Josh and I both rolled over and realized that the other one was awake, so we stayed up and talked and laughed until it was time to get ready to go. As we were approaching Trocadéro, Josh held my hand tighter than he ever had before as we walked over to the same spot that we were standing in the night prior eating our chocolate-filled crepes. To my utmost surprise, Josh turned to me as we were watching the sun rise behind the Eiffel Tower, and asked, “Do you know why I brought you half way across the world?” At that moment, I realized what was happening and tears immediately filled my eyes. I turned toward Josh, saw that he was already down on one knee, and almost instantly started sobbing.
I could not believe that the moment I had been waiting for was finally here. Before he could even ask if I would marry him, I repeated “Yes!” over and over again, as he laughed and finally asked the question. I could not image a more breathtakingly beautiful moment….until Josh surprised me with one more thing.
As soon as he finished wiping my tears away, he looked and me and said, “I would like you to meet Lindsey, the professional photographer I hired.” I could not believe it. Sure enough, a lady with a gorgeous camera came over to us and explained that she had captured the entire proposal from afar.
We proceeded to take a few more pictures, and looking back on them now, I still can’t get over how much Josh managed to pull off: a surprise Parisian proposal, a hidden professional photographer, and a moment that will continue to take my breath away for years to come. I am so excited to know that this is the man that I will call my husband because he is the most amazing man I have ever met.
