How We Met
Alexis and I met about 3 years ago at work. I had seen her a few times, but we never really crossed paths. On Friday, April 18, 2014, she’d heard that I had recently moved to an apartment near her and struck up a conversation about how it would be nice to hang out sometime. She had moved here from Virginia six months prior, so she didn’t know too many people. We discovered that we both have black labs (mine is Darth Vader, hers is Olive Martini) and how it would be fun to get them together to play sometime. I asked her if she wanted to meet up later that night, and she said yes! Alexis’ 25th birthday was the following weekend and she invited me to her BBQ. I figured she still was interested if she wanted me there! Two weeks later, I invited her to my sister’s college graduation down in Gunnison, CO. At this point, we were still friends, and not officially dating.
My Grandma thought differently and began introducing Alexis to everyone as my girlfriend. Neither of us corrected her, but I think we both felt a little awkward since we hadn’t had the conversation ourselves. So that weekend, on Saturday, May 10th, we decided that we’ll take my Grandma’s advice and “officially” start dating. We’ve been living together for about 2.5 years now and are in the process of moving into our first house! We love to travel and go on as many adventures as we possibly can, whether it’s hiking, camping, or my favorite, fly fishing.
how they asked
On a Friday afternoon, I asked Alexis if she wanted to try snowshoeing that Sunday, which she had never done before! Surprisingly she said yes! I also hinted that she may want to get a manicure (A few months ago she made a comment that she wanted her nails to look good when the moment happened). We woke up at 5:00am that Sunday to drive up to Rocky Mountain National Park to snowshoe up to Dream Lake (great place to propose right?!). It was about 12 degrees outside and about 30mph winds, but we started to snowshoe. A few times we got lost on the trail, but we had fun with it! When we got up to Dream Lake, the wind had picked up and we were both frozen. When I took more than a few minutes to setup the tripod, and I had a feeling Alexis knew what was about to happen. I came over and gave her a kiss and said, “I love you.” I got down on one knee with a speech prepared, however, I got choked up.
All I could say was, “Alexis Janel Earley, I love you. Will you marry me?” Of course she said yes with tears coming down her face!
After we got back to the car, Alexis proceeded to call her parents. Unfortunately, FaceTime wasn’t working on her phone, so we had to make a regular phone call. At the time, we were in the process of buying a house, so they assumed that’s what the phone call was about. She told them to check their phone for a picture she was sending, and needless to say, they freaked out! We went to pick up our dogs from my parents house, since they were watching them for us. We celebrated with a champagne toast!
From Alexis: This day was everything I have ever imagined and more! To get engaged at the top of a snow covered lake, with just the two of us there, was a fairy tale. Yes it was freezing and windy, but in that moment all I could focus on was Justin. He’s the man of my dreams and I cannot wait to begin this journey. To my better half, I love you, and you’re more romantic than you think!
